Quick answer
Women who hate needles now have two FDA-approved GLP-1 pills for weight loss: the Wegovy pill (semaglutide) and Foundayo (orforglipron), each taken once a day. The Wegovy pill suits you if you can take it on waking with a little water and wait at least 30 minutes before coffee, food or other pills, while Foundayo suits a busier routine because you can take it any time, with or without food. Self-pay starts at $149 a month for the Wegovy pill's 1.5 mg starting dose and for Foundayo through LillyDirect.

Key takeaways
- Women who hate needles can now choose between two FDA-approved once-a-day GLP-1 pills for weight loss: the Wegovy pill (semaglutide) and Foundayo (orforglipron).
- Both pills helped many people lose a real chunk of weight over more than a year of daily use, but the results can't tell you which pill works better.
- Self-pay starts at $149 a month for the Wegovy pill's 1.5 mg starting dose and for Foundayo through LillyDirect, or as little as $25 a month with commercial insurance.
- The Wegovy pill suits mornings when you can wait 30 minutes before coffee, Foundayo suits busier days, and thyroid medicine or the birth control pill can change which one fits you.
- Expect some stomach upset that often flares with each dose step and then settles, and if a weekly shot sounds easier than a daily pill, our clinical team can prescribe semaglutide or tirzepatide.
If needles put you off, you now have two FDA-approved GLP-1 pills for weight loss: the Wegovy pill (semaglutide) and Foundayo (orforglipron). You take either one once a day. The better fit for you comes down mostly to your mornings and the other medicines you take. The Wegovy pill has to go down on an empty stomach, followed by a 30-minute wait before food, drinks or other pills. Foundayo can be taken any time, with or without food.
Is there a GLP-1 pill for weight loss?
Yes, and there are two. The FDA approved Foundayo (orforglipron) on April 1, 2026, and you take it as one pill a day. According to the Foundayo label, it is for adults with obesity, or adults with overweight and at least one weight-related health condition. You take it alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more activity.
Orforglipron is a small-molecule pill rather than a peptide like semaglutide. It acts on the same GLP-1 receptor, the one that turns down your appetite.
The Wegovy pill is semaglutide, the same medicine that is in the Wegovy pen, in a daily tablet. It is approved for weight reduction in adults, and the maintenance dose is 25 mg once a day.
How do the Wegovy pill and Foundayo compare?
| Wegovy pill (semaglutide) | Foundayo (orforglipron) | |
|---|---|---|
| How you take it | One tablet each morning on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of water and no other drink. Swallow it whole, then wait at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink or take other pills. (Wegovy label) | One tablet a day, with or without food. Swallow it whole. Never break, crush or chew it, and take no more than one tablet a day. (Foundayo label) |
| Dose steps | Starts at 1.5 mg a day for 30 days, then steps up every 30 days to 25 mg. | Starts at 0.8 mg. After at least 30 days it goes to 2.5 mg, then 5.5 mg. It can go up to 9 mg, 14.5 mg or 17.2 mg after at least 30 days on each dose, depending on how well it works and how you feel. The maximum is 17.2 mg. |
| Weight results | In adults with obesity, or overweight with a weight-related condition, 59.8% of people on the 25 mg pill lost at least 10% of their body weight after 64 weeks (14.4% on placebo). 47% lost at least 15% (5.5% on placebo). (Wegovy label) | In a 72-week trial of 3,127 adults with obesity and no diabetes, the highest dose lowered body weight by 11.2% on average (2.1% on placebo). 54.6% lost at least 10% and 36% lost at least 15%. (NEJM trial) |
| Cost | Self-pay from $149 a month for the 1.5 mg starting dose, or as little as $25 a month with commercial insurance. (Wegovy savings page) | Through LillyDirect, self-pay from $149, or from $25 a month with commercial coverage. (Lilly announcement) |
These numbers come from separate trials with different people and different lengths, so they cannot tell you which pill works better.
In the Foundayo trial, waist size, blood pressure and blood fats also improved compared with placebo. The Foundayo label also says weight came down regardless of age, sex, race, ethnicity, starting BMI or blood sugar status, so the results were not limited to one kind of patient.
Which GLP-1 pill fits my routine?
- Your mornings. If you can take a pill on waking with a little water and wait half an hour before coffee, the Wegovy pill's routine is manageable. If your mornings are chaos, Foundayo's "any time, with or without food" rule may fit better.
- Thyroid medicine. If you take levothyroxine for your thyroid, tell your clinical team. In a drug interaction study, the semaglutide tablet raised levothyroxine exposure (how much of the medicine reaches your blood) by 33%. The Wegovy label says to monitor other oral medicines you take with it.
- The birth control pill. If you are on the pill and choose Foundayo, the label says to switch to a non-pill method or add a barrier method, such as condoms, for 30 days after you start and for 30 days after each dose increase.
- Pregnancy. Foundayo may harm a pregnancy. The label advises effective birth control while you take it, and stopping it once a pregnancy is recognized.
- Thyroid cancer history. Neither pill is for you if you or anyone in your family has had medullary thyroid cancer, or if you have MEN 2, an inherited condition affecting the hormone glands.
What does starting a GLP-1 pill feel like?
Expect your stomach to notice. In the Foundayo trial, stomach and gut side effects were the most common, and they were mostly mild to moderate. Side effects overall looked like those of other GLP-1 medicines. They led 5.3% to 10.3% of people on Foundayo to stop, compared with 2.7% on placebo.
In a small interview study of nine people taking GLP-1s, side effects often flared with each dose step and then settled. One woman said: "Every time I went up a little bit I would feel nauseous for like a week and then it would settle down."
Some people cannot get past the low doses. On r/Zepbound, one person stayed at 2.5 mg on their weekly shot because of side effects and stopped after about two months. They still lost 23 lbs. Their advice: "Listen to your body while it whispers, before it starts to yell." If your side effects are getting worse instead of better, tell your clinical team early.
Is a weekly GLP-1 shot really that bad if I hate needles?
You are not alone. In a survey of 2,000 adults prescribed injectable diabetes medicines, injection worries, such as needle fear, pain or needle size, were the most common barrier to staying on treatment, named by 42%.
In the same small interview study, most people who worried about giving themselves a shot found the injections were no problem once they started. One woman described the needles this way: "They're the tiniest little things…You don't feel them."
Think of the choice as a trade. A pill is a small task every single day. A weekly shot is one tiny needle a week and nothing to remember on the other six days.
Our clinical team can prescribe semaglutide or tirzepatide if one of them fits your goal. You can tell them how you feel about needles from the start. Take the quiz and tell us you hate needles. Your clinical team will use your answers, your routine and the other medicines you take to see which GLP-1 plan fits your weight goal.

Can I drink coffee after taking the Wegovy pill?
Yes, but wait at least 30 minutes after taking the Wegovy pill before you have coffee. Take the tablet in the morning on an empty stomach with up to 4 ounces of plain water and no other drink, and swallow it whole. After those 30 minutes, you can eat, drink and take your other pills.
Is orforglipron the same as semaglutide?
No, orforglipron is a different medicine, but it works on the same GLP-1 receptor, the one that turns down your appetite. Semaglutide is a peptide, a short chain of protein building blocks, while orforglipron is a small-molecule drug, a different kind of chemical. Orforglipron is sold as the Foundayo pill, and semaglutide is the medicine in both the Wegovy pill and the Wegovy pen.
How much does Foundayo cost without insurance?
Foundayo starts at $149 a month self-pay through LillyDirect, with free home delivery, according to Lilly's approval announcement. With commercial coverage, it starts at $25 a month. Lilly says terms and conditions apply.
Do GLP-1 pills have the same side effects as the shots?
Mostly, yes: stomach and gut side effects are the most common, and Foundayo's side effects looked like those of other GLP-1 medicines. They were mostly mild to moderate, and Foundayo's common ones include nausea, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, indigestion, stomach pain, headache, tiredness, heartburn, gas and hair loss. People often say side effects flare with each dose step and then settle. If yours get worse instead of better, tell your clinical team early.
