Key takeaways

  • Pliva advanced BPC-157 as PL14736 to a Phase II ulcerative colitis trial after early safety testing, but no patient results appeared in journals, abstracts or press releases.
  • BPC-157 has no FDA-approved use for gut problems, and licensed U.S. pharmacies are barred from compounding it under Category 2.
  • A gastroenterologist who treats Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis says he does not recommend BPC-157 and links current interest to blogs, forums and peptide clinics.

If you live with cramping, diarrhea or bowel inflammation and wonder what BPC-157 has done for gut problems in people, the tested record is almost empty. One company started a formal ulcerative colitis trial in the early 2000s after a small safety test, but it never published patient results. The rest of the bowel story comes from animals.

What happened to the ulcerative colitis trial?

Croatian drug company Pliva tested a form of BPC-157 called PL14736 for ulcerative colitis, a long term condition that causes inflammation and sores in the colon. A Phase I test, which checks safety in healthy volunteers, found no safety problems in 32 people, and the company then started a Phase II test, which tests whether patients improve ghost-trial account.

No journal article, meeting abstract or press release ever reported the Phase II results ghost-trial account. A 2012 review from the Zagreb group behind the work said the bowel effect had so far only been tested in clinical phase II, and it described no toxic effect in safety testing and no side effects in trials 2012 Zagreb review.

Is there any other human gut data?

A 2025 systematic review counted 35 animal studies and one uncontrolled 16-patient chart review as the full evidence base for BPC-157 2025 review summary. In that chart review, doctors looked back at records without a comparison group, so the records cannot show whether BPC-157 caused any change.

BPC-157 has no FDA approved use for gut problems or any other condition, and FDA placed it in Category 2 for compounding in September 2023, which bars licensed United States pharmacies from preparing it regulatory summary. In April 2026 the United Kingdom medicines regulator opened an inquiry into clinics that market unlicensed compounds and named BPC-157 first. The regulator said little credible scientific evidence sat behind the health claims U.K. inquiry report.

What animal gut studies show and why they do not settle it

In rats with an abnormal tunnel between the colon and the skin that leaked, BPC-157 given by mouth or by injection helped the tunnel close. Researchers saw closure with the eye and under the microscope, and the repaired colon held more water without leaking rat fistula study. In the same test, sulphasalazine helped only moderately and a steroid made healing worse rat fistula study.

Rats do not tell us how you will respond if you have ulcerative colitis, Crohn disease or ongoing bowel symptoms. Consultant gastroenterologist Dr. Pranab Gyawali, who has treated Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis for 25 years, says he does not recommend BPC-157 for bowel disease and remains highly skeptical. He links the surge of interest to wellness blogs, Reddit and peptide clinics Dubai gastroenterologist opinion.

FAQ

What happened to the BPC-157 ulcerative colitis trial in people?

Pliva completed early safety testing and started a Phase II trial, but no journal article, meeting abstract or press release ever reported patient results, and a 2012 review described the bowel effect as tested only in clinical phase II.

Is there any other human gut data for BPC-157?

The 2025 systematic review found only animal studies plus one 16-patient chart review without a comparison group, so that review cannot show whether BPC-157 caused any change.

What did the rat fistula study find?

In rats with a leaking tunnel between colon and skin, BPC-157 given by mouth or injection helped the tunnel close on visual, microscopic and water-holding checks, while sulphasalazine helped only moderately and a steroid made healing worse.

Is BPC-157 approved for gut problems?

No. It has no FDA-approved use, licensed U.S. pharmacies cannot prepare it under Category 2, and the U.K. regulator in April 2026 said little credible evidence sat behind marketed health claims and named BPC-157 first in an inquiry into unlicensed compounds.
