Quick answer
BPC-157 is not FDA-approved and has no legal basis as a retail drug, food, or supplement in the United States. Advisors voted in July 2026 to recommend prescription compounding, but FDA has made no final decision and retail or research-chemical sales would remain outside that path.

Key takeaways
- FDA placed BPC-157 in Category 2 in 2023 for further safety review, then removed it from that category on April 15, 2026 to send it for advisory review.
- FDA staff proposed against adding BPC-157 to the compounding list, pointing to very limited clinical information on benefit and safety.
- Tested athletes face a separate ban: WADA lists BPC-157 as an S0 Non-Approved Substance prohibited at all times.
BPC-157 is not FDA-approved, and you still cannot buy it legally as a drug, supplement or store shelf skin fix. On July 23, 2026, FDA advisors voted 8-6 with one abstention to recommend it for pharmacy compounding, but FDA has issued no final decision.
Is BPC-157 FDA-approved or legal to buy?
No. FDA reviewers found very limited clinical information on BPC-157 and noted a lack of clinical data showing benefit or safety (FDA briefing). The agency has not approved it for any human use, and USADA notes it is not approved for human clinical use (USADA overview).
That leaves no legal basis for BPC-157 as a retail drug, food or supplement ingredient in the United States. Vials and capsules sold online as research chemicals sit outside the legal drug supply.
What changed for compounding in 2026?
Compounding is a separate path. The Section 503A list is the FDA list that says what licensed compounding pharmacies can prepare for one named patient with a prescription.
FDA put BPC-157 in Category 2 in 2023. Category 2 means FDA saw a possible safety risk that needed more review before it would allow routine compounding. For BPC-157, FDA cited possible immune reactions with certain routes, complex peptide impurities and little or no safety information for the proposed routes (FDA Category 2 page).
On April 15, 2026, FDA removed BPC-157 free base and acetate from Category 2 after the nominations were withdrawn, and set it for advisory review (Holt Law summary, FDA 503A update). On July 23, FDA staff proposed that BPC-157 not be added to the 503A list. Staff pointed to 5 available trials that were short and small (FDA briefing). The Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee voted 8-6 with one abstention to recommend adding it anyway (AJMC report).
Does the panel vote make it legal now?
No. The committee gives advice. FDA makes the decision, and FDA has not issued one (LifeLink summary).
Even if FDA adds BPC-157 to the 503A list, that decision would cover only preparation by a licensed compounding pharmacy for an individual patient with a prescription. It would not turn BPC-157 into an approved drug and would not cover retail, spa or research chemical sales.
Tested athletes face a separate rule. WADA places BPC-157 in S0 Non-Approved Substances, the class for substances not approved for human therapeutic use, and bans it at all times (WADA List, 2025 List PDF).

Is BPC-157 FDA-approved?
No. FDA has not approved BPC-157 for any human use, and reviewers found very limited clinical information on benefit and safety.
Does the July 2026 advisory vote make BPC-157 legal to buy online or in stores?
No. The committee gives advice only and FDA has made no final decision. Even if BPC-157 is added to the 503A list, that would cover only preparation by a licensed compounding pharmacy for a named patient with a prescription, not retail, spa, or research-chemical sales.
What happened with BPC-157 compounding status in 2026?
FDA removed BPC-157 free base and acetate from Category 2 on April 15, 2026 after the nominations were withdrawn and sent it for advisory review. FDA staff proposed not adding it, and the committee then voted 8-6 with one abstention to recommend adding it.
Can tested athletes use BPC-157?
No. WADA places BPC-157 in S0 Non-Approved Substances and bans it at all times for tested athletes.
