Quick answer

GHK-Cu copper peptide has the stronger case for fine lines and firmness: in women in their 50s, GHK-Cu creams softened fine lines and wrinkles and made skin firmer, thicker and denser, while Matrixyl 3000 has less behind it and nobody has pitted the two directly against each other. Matrixyl 3000 and GHK-Cu both work slowly, so give either one about 8 to 12 weeks of daily use before you judge it. Both peptides soften fine lines and texture, but neither will lift sagging skin.

Key takeaways

  • Matrixyl 3000 and GHK-Cu are close relatives, because one of the two peptides in Matrixyl 3000 is built on the same GHK core as GHK-Cu, with a fatty tail instead of copper.
  • Nobody has put Matrixyl 3000 and GHK-Cu head to head, so any claim that one beats the other rests on comparing separate results.
  • GHK-Cu creams softened fine lines and wrinkles and made skin firmer and thicker in women in their 50s, mostly in work from the team that discovered GHK-Cu, while an independent check after laser treatment found users rated their skin as more improved even though outside graders saw no clear difference.
  • Matrixyl 3000 peptides in an eye serum made wrinkles measure shorter and shallower within a month, but the women using it were not very impressed by the change.
  • Give either peptide about three months, and if firmness is your goal, ask your clinical team about pairing GHK-Cu with tretinoin, since peptides soften lines but will not fix sagging.

No study has tested Matrixyl 3000 against GHK-Cu head to head, so neither one is proven better. GHK-Cu copper peptide has more published human research for fine lines and firmness, including 12-week cream studies in women in their 50s. Both work slowly, over roughly 8 to 12 weeks, and both soften fine lines rather than lift sagging skin.

What is the difference between Matrixyl 3000 and GHK-Cu?

Matrixyl 3000 is a two-peptide blend made to help skin look smoother and firmer with regular use. GHK-Cu is a tiny peptide called GHK holding a copper ion. Your body makes GHK, and blood levels fall from about 200 ng/mL at age 20 to about 80 ng/mL by 60.

The two are more closely related than their marketing suggests. Palmitoyl tripeptide-1, one of the two peptides in Matrixyl 3000, is the same GHK core with a fatty tail attached and no copper. The tail is meant to help it get into skin.

Matrixyl 3000 GHK-Cu
What it is A blend of palmitoyl tripeptide-1 and palmitoyl tetrapeptide-7 GHK, a three-part peptide your body makes, bound to copper
Shared GHK core Palmitoyl tripeptide-1 is GHK with a fatty tail and no copper GHK with copper attached
Best human data A study of a four-peptide eye serum that included both Matrixyl 3000 peptides Placebo-controlled face and eye cream studies in women, measuring fine lines, firmness and skin density
How long studies ran 28 days for the eye serum 12 weeks for the face and eye creams
Who ran the studies The eye serum study's corresponding author works at Dingmageili Biotechnology. There is no independent trial of the blend. The cream studies are collected in a review by Loren Pickart, who first isolated GHK-Cu, and his skin-care company's research team. There is also one small independent trial.

No published study has tested GHK-Cu against Matrixyl or Matrixyl 3000 directly. Every "which is better" claim you read compares separate studies with different designs.

What do studies show for fine lines and firmness?

GHK-Cu has the stronger record in women. In a 12-week study of 67 women aged 50 to 59 with mild to advanced sun damage, a GHK-Cu cream used twice a day improved firmness and sagging. It also softened fine lines and deeper wrinkles, evened out blotchy pigment and made skin thicker and denser.

The eye area showed similar changes. A GHK-Cu eye cream tested on 41 women for 12 weeks did better than both a placebo cream and a vitamin K eye cream on lines and wrinkles, overall appearance and skin thickness.

There is also a collagen comparison. In a one-month test of creams applied to the thighs, collagen production rose in 70% of women using GHK-Cu, compared with 50% using vitamin C cream and 40% using retinoic acid.

The GHK-Cu studies above are collected in a review by Loren Pickart, who first isolated GHK-Cu, and his skin-care company's research team. One small independent trial tested GHK-Cu after CO2 laser resurfacing, and 13 people finished it. Graders who did not know who used what found no significant difference in redness, wrinkles or skin quality. The GHK-Cu users rated their own skin as more improved on a patient questionnaire.

Matrixyl 3000 has no independent trial of the blend. The closest study is a 28-day test of a four-peptide eye serum that included both Matrixyl 3000 peptides. It was used twice a day. Wrinkle length dropped 18.06%, wrinkle volume dropped 12.69%, and skin measured firmer. Hydration and elasticity did not change significantly. The women in the study did not rate the wrinkle changes very highly. The corresponding author works at Dingmageili Biotechnology.

How long do peptides take to smooth wrinkles?

Plan on about three months. Dermatologist Dr. Engelman says meaningful results from the peptide itself typically take 8 to 12 weeks of regular use. A serum's hydrating ingredients can make skin look plumper right away, but that early plumpness comes from hydration, not the peptide.

The GHK-Cu face and eye studies, in 71, 41 and 67 women, each ran 12 weeks. That tells you when to judge it.

One commenter in an r/Peptides thread about GHK-Cu put it this way: "It can take 3 or more months to see results. It’s a slow build."

Take a photo in the same light before you start and again at week 12. That way you judge the change by what you see, not by memory.

Can copper peptides tighten sagging skin?

Not much. Peptides help fine lines and texture, but Dr. Engelman says no single peptide will restore lost volume. She calls Matrixyl 3000 a credible supporting ingredient but not a substitute for sunscreen or retinoids like tretinoin.

One commenter described where the results stopped for them: "Really reduced the wrinkles on my face by topically applying and pinning GHK-cu, plus tret, but it could never conquer the skin laxity in my neck. So I finally went in for a face/necklift."

If firmness is your goal, ask about pairing GHK-Cu with tretinoin. Both are part of Hot or Nothing skin plans, and your clinical team decides what fits your skin.

If your skin is sensitive, Dr. Engelman may suggest putting peptides on in the morning and a retinoid on separately at night.

Is GHK-Cu better as a serum or an injection?

For your face, the evidence supports skin application. Every face result above comes from creams applied to skin. A top comment in the r/Peptides GHK-Cu thread makes the same point: "all of the evidence for the substance comes from when it’s used as topical application".

The FDA has said compounded injectable GHK-Cu may pose a risk of immune reactions, because the peptide can clump and carry impurities. The agency also said there are limited human data on its safety. Ask your clinical team which form fits you.

Getting peptides into skin is hard for both GHK-Cu and Matrixyl. In a laboratory study, almost no copper peptide or copper crossed intact human skin. The fatty-tailed pentapeptide in the original Matrixyl also passed through skin poorly in lab tests. This is one reason to use a well-made formula every day and give it time.

On safety for skin use, the researchers behind the GHK-Cu review say no issues have come up in its use as a skin cosmetic or in human wound-healing studies.

For a sense of over-the-counter cost, NIOD Copper Amino Isolate Serum 3 1:1, which contains 1% GHK-Cu, sells for $62.00 for 15 mL.

If you want softer fine lines and firmer-feeling skin, take the quiz. Our clinical team will look at your skin goals and decide whether a plan with GHK-Cu, tretinoin or both fits you.

FAQ

Can you use GHK-Cu and Matrixyl 3000 together?

Yes, and some serums already combine Matrixyl 3000 with copper peptides in one bottle. Nobody has tested whether the pair works better than either one alone, so do not count on doubling your results. If your skin is sensitive, patch test any new product on the inside of your wrist for two to three days before it goes on your face.

Can you use copper peptides with tretinoin?

Yes, and pairing GHK-Cu with tretinoin is worth asking about if firmness is your goal. Both are part of Hot or Nothing skin plans. If your skin is sensitive, dermatologist Dr. Engelman suggests putting peptides on in the morning and a retinoid such as tretinoin on separately at night. Your clinical team decides which combination fits your skin.

Does GHK-Cu irritate sensitive skin?

GHK-Cu has a gentle track record on skin. The researchers behind the main GHK-Cu review say no issues have come up in its use as a skin cosmetic or in human wound-healing studies. In lab tests on skin cells, GHK-Cu also calmed an inflammation signal, though that was in a dish, not on a face. Any formula can still bother sensitive skin, so patch test on your inner wrist for two to three days first.

What percentage of GHK-Cu works on wrinkles?

No single percentage of GHK-Cu has been shown to work best on wrinkles. Even the researchers behind the main GHK-Cu review say more work is needed to pin down the right dose and the best way to deliver it. Over-the-counter serums vary, and NIOD Copper Amino Isolate Serum 3 1:1, for example, contains 1% GHK-Cu. Because GHK-Cu has a hard time getting through skin, a well-made formula used every day for about 12 weeks matters as much as the number on the label.
