Quick answer
Minoxidil is the better place to start for women whose part is widening, because it comes first in line for pattern thinning, while Nutrafol is a drug-free supplement. Expect a possible shed in the first weeks and give minoxidil 3 to 6 months. Nutrafol costs $79 a month on subscription at nutrafol.com (checked October 2026) and suits women who want no prescription.

Key takeaways
- If your part is widening, start with minoxidil, because the foam is approved to regrow hair on top of the scalp and minoxidil pills come first in line for women's pattern thinning.
- Minoxidil pills cost $20 a month on a 1-month supply at Happy Head with a dermatologist consultation included, about a quarter of Nutrafol's $79 monthly subscription at nutrafol.com (both checked October 2026).
- Women taking Nutrafol Women had more thick and fine hairs on their scalp at 3 months and at 6 months, and no side effects were reported.
- With minoxidil, plan for a shed that starts 2 to 4 weeks in and lasts 3 to 6 weeks, plus some extra facial or body hair, while pills at hair-loss doses barely change blood pressure.
- Nutrafol suits women who want no prescription, and it gives a full refund if you see no results after 6 months, as long as you buy 6 bottles on subscription, take 4 capsules a day, use the myNutrafol app and send monthly progress photos.
No study we found has compared minoxidil and Nutrafol head to head, but if your part is widening, minoxidil is the one to start with. Women's Rogaine 5% minoxidil foam has an FDA-approved label to regrow hair on the top of the scalp. A 2025 review of low-dose minoxidil pills says they can be a first-line treatment for women's pattern hair loss, the gradual thinning on top that widens your part. Nutrafol is a drug-free supplement that costs $79 a month on subscription at nutrafol.com (checked October 2026). It is backed by a small six-month trial in women who felt their hair was thinning.
How do minoxidil and Nutrafol compare?
| Minoxidil 5% foam (Women's Rogaine) | Low-dose minoxidil pills | Nutrafol | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Over-the-counter drug with an FDA-approved label to regrow hair on the top of the scalp | Prescription pill used off-label for hair loss (for a use the pill was not first approved for) | Drug-free supplement. Nutrafol Women is sold for women 18 to 44, and Women's Balance is for women 45 and up |
| How you take it | Half a capful on the scalp once a day | Women usually start at 0.5 mg or 0.625 mg a day. If needed, the dose goes up every 3 months, to no more than 2.5 mg a day | 4 capsules a day |
| Time to results | The label says results may show at 3 months, and some women need at least 6 months | An early shed can start 2 to 4 weeks in. Your dose is reviewed every 3 months | Hair counts were up at day 90 and day 180 in a six-month trial |
| Main side effects | Scalp irritation, unwanted facial hair. Stop and get checked for chest pain, a racing heartbeat, dizziness or swelling | Extra facial or body hair, dizziness when standing, fluid retention, a faster heartbeat, headache | No side effects reported in the six-month trial |

Prices checked October 2026.
The foam label is clear on two more points. It will not work for every woman, and you have to keep using it, or the hair loss starts again.
On price, a month of minoxidil pills from Happy Head costs about a quarter of Nutrafol's $79 subscription (both checked October 2026).
What do studies show for minoxidil and Nutrafol in women?
No study we found has put minoxidil and Nutrafol head to head, so neither has been shown to beat the other. The choice comes down to what each one is and what each has shown on its own.
Minoxidil comes first in line in the medical literature. The 2025 review says low-dose minoxidil pills may be used as a first-line treatment for pattern hair loss in women and men, and it points to published studies and some academic guidelines that back this up.
Nutrafol has a placebo-controlled trial in women. In the six-month trial, 40 women who felt their hair was thinning took either Nutrafol Women (26 women) or a placebo (14 women). The Nutrafol group had significantly more hairs in the treated area at day 90 and day 180, both thick hairs and fine ones. No side effects were reported.
What side effects do minoxidil and Nutrafol cause?
The side effect women dread most with minoxidil is the shed. According to the 2025 review, minoxidil can cause a burst of shedding that usually starts 2 to 4 weeks in and lasts 3 to 6 weeks. Studies saw it in 16% to 32% of people, and it is often followed by thicker hair. Extra facial or body hair is common. In one study of 54 women on pills, 40.5% of those taking minoxidil alone grew some. Headaches were reported in 0.4% to 9% of people on pills, usually 15 to 20 days in, and common painkillers help.
At hair-loss doses, minoxidil pills barely moved blood pressure. In a 24-week trial in women described in the same review, which compared 1 mg pills with 5% topical minoxidil, average heart rate on the pill rose from 72 to 77 beats a minute, and blood pressure did not change significantly. A review of 16 studies with 2,387 patients also found no significant change in blood pressure.
Where your minoxidil is made matters. In a study described in the 2025 review, one clinic recorded 12 serious cases in about 1,700 prescriptions (0.7%), and all of them were women taking compounded capsules. Most of those capsules held 10 to 100 times the prescribed dose. The women had whole-body swelling or fainting, and two had a stroke or a heart attack. Pills are not recommended if you have had a recent heart attack or have heart failure from a weak heart, severe heart valve disease or advanced kidney disease. Ask your clinical team what to watch for.
The foam label tells you to stop and get checked if you get any of these:
- chest pain
- a racing heartbeat
- faintness or dizziness
- sudden unexplained weight gain
- swollen hands or feet
- scalp irritation
- unwanted facial hair
The label also says the foam may be harmful if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and to ask before using it if you have heart disease.
Nutrafol's six-month trial reported no side effects. Nutrafol says not to take it while pregnant or trying to conceive. It also says to check with your clinician first if you take other medicines, especially blood thinners.
What women share
We read 251 threads posted from October 2025 to October 2026: 248 in r/FemaleHairLoss and 3 in r/Hairloss. 141 of the 251 named a treatment. Of those 141:
- 76 of 141 mentioned topical minoxidil.
- 68 of 141 mentioned oral minoxidil.
- 60 of 141 mentioned spironolactone.
- 7 of 141 mentioned PRP (platelet-rich plasma).
Most women who named a treatment were talking about minoxidil in some form.
Extra body hair is a worry that comes up. One woman wrote, "I worry about going on minoxidil because I have a lot of body hair as it is but it seems to be the only treatment for hair growth." Another replied, "even if I turn into a little monkey as long as I have hair on my head I don’t care."
Women who stick with minoxidil talk about patience. The top comment on a progress post from a woman four years into oral minoxidil put it this way: "Progress happens over years, not weeks."
Before you start, plan for a shed in the first weeks and some extra facial or body hair. Then give minoxidil months, not weeks, before you judge it.

How long does the minoxidil shed last for women?
The minoxidil shed usually lasts 3 to 6 weeks and starts 2 to 4 weeks after you begin. A 2025 review of low-dose minoxidil found it in 16% to 32% of people, and it is often followed by thicker hair. Plan for it before you start, and give minoxidil months, not weeks, before you judge it.
Do you have to use minoxidil forever?
Yes, you have to keep using minoxidil to keep the hair it regrows. The Women's Rogaine foam label says continued use is needed to grow and keep new hair, or the hair loss starts again. Women on minoxidil in r/FemaleHairLoss talk about progress over years, not weeks.
What dose of oral minoxidil do women take?
Women usually start low-dose minoxidil pills at 0.5 mg or 0.625 mg a day. If needed, the dose goes up every 3 months, to no more than 2.5 mg a day. Happy Head sells 1.25 mg pills for $17 to $20 a month depending on supply length, with a dermatologist consultation included (checked October 2026). Where your pills are made matters, because some compounded capsules held 10 to 100 times the prescribed dose.
Does Nutrafol work for menopause hair loss?
No trial we found has tested Nutrafol in menopause hair loss. The six-month trial tested Nutrafol Women in women who felt their hair was thinning, and Nutrafol sells a separate formula, Women's Balance, for women 45 and up that it says supports hormonal changes such as menopause. If your part is widening, minoxidil is the stronger place to start.
