Quick answer
NAD+ helps your cells turn food into usable energy and run repair enzymes, and NR or NMN raise NAD+ in blood. Higher blood levels have not improved thinking scores or muscle function in trials, and the afternoon dip in drive many women feel was not measured.

Key takeaways
- Tissue and cellular NAD+ levels fall gradually with age, a decline linked to memory decline, metabolic disease, muscle loss and frailty.
- How well the body absorbs and uses NR compared with NMN has not been systematically compared.
- NR remains widely sold as a supplement, while NMN cannot be sold as a dietary supplement after the FDA's fall 2022 determination.
NAD+ is a helper molecule your cells use to turn food into usable energy and to run enzymes that manage repair and immune responses. Taking NR or NMN raises NAD+ in blood, but higher blood levels have not yet made people stronger, more energetic or sharper in human trials.
What does NAD+ do in your body?
Your cells use NAD+ to carry energy during metabolism, so muscles, brain and other tissues can do their work. NAD+ also fuels enzymes including sirtuins, CD38 and PARPs, which help control DNA repair, inflammation and stress responses.
Tissue and cellular NAD+ levels fall gradually with age in rodents and humans. A 2020 review of NAD+ and aging linked that decline to memory decline, metabolic disease, loss of muscle and frailty.
Does raising NAD+ mean more energy or slower aging?
A higher blood number has not meant a change you can feel. In a 10-week trial in older adults with mild memory concerns, NR raised blood NAD+ 2.6-fold while scores on a standard thinking test stayed the same (trial report). In combined trials where average participant ages ranged from about 61 to 83, NMN did not improve muscle mass, grip strength, walking speed or chair-stand performance compared with placebo (meta-analysis of NMN and NR trials).
Those studies measured thinking scores and muscle function. They did not measure the afternoon dip in drive or stamina many women notice, and that gap leaves everyday energy unanswered.
How are NR and NMN different in practice?
NR and NMN are both building blocks your body can turn into NAD+, and human trials show both improve NAD+ status in blood. How well the body absorbs and uses one compared with the other has not been systematically compared (review of NMN trials).
The practical difference is what you find for sale. In fall 2022 the FDA determined NMN falls outside the dietary supplement definition and cannot be sold as a dietary supplement (industry report on the FDA position). NR remains widely sold as a supplement, while NMN sits in a different regulatory spot.

Does raising NAD+ improve thinking?
Raising blood NAD+ with NR did not change scores on a standard thinking test in human trials.
Does raising NAD+ make muscles stronger?
In combined trials in older adults, NMN did not improve muscle mass, grip strength, walking speed or chair-stand performance compared with placebo.
Will NR or NMN help afternoon low energy?
Trials measured thinking scores and muscle function and did not measure the afternoon dip in drive or stamina, so everyday energy remains unanswered.
What is the practical difference between NR and NMN?
Both are building blocks the body can turn into NAD+. Absorption has not been systematically compared. NR remains widely sold as a supplement, while NMN cannot be sold as a dietary supplement.
