Quick answer

The best injectable skin booster depends on what bothers you. Skin boosters such as SKINVIVE, Profhilo and polynucleotide injections (Rejuran) help dull, dry, crepey or finely lined skin, but they don't lift sagging or fill deep folds around the mouth, which call for a volume injectable such as Sculptra. SKINVIVE is FDA-approved to smooth the cheeks and soften neck lines in adults over 21.

Key takeaways

  • Skin boosters such as SKINVIVE, Profhilo and polynucleotides improve how your skin looks up close (dull, dry, crepey or finely lined), but they don't lift sagging skin.
  • If heaviness or deepening folds around your mouth bother you, ask your injector about a volume treatment such as Sculptra instead of a booster.
  • SKINVIVE smooths the cheeks for at least six months and is FDA-approved for the cheeks and neck lines, Profhilo is used on the face, neck, arms and hands, and polynucleotides usually take three sessions four weeks apart, but no booster has been proven better than another.
  • Boosters sting and can leave small bumps and bruises that fade, which show more on the neck, and injecting deeper isn't automatically safer, so choose an injector who knows facial anatomy.
  • A Seoul-based beauty blog estimates Profhilo at $800 to $1,200 per session in the US and Europe, so ask clinics for the total cost of the first round plus a year of top-ups before you book.

The best injectable skin booster depends on what bothers you. If your skin looks dull, dry, crepey or finely lined, a booster is built for that. If your face has started to sag or hollow around the mouth, you need a different tool. Skin boosters such as SKINVIVE, Profhilo and polynucleotide injections (sold as Rejuran) are meant to improve skin quality, not add contouring volume. Folds from volume loss call for a different kind of injectable, such as Sculptra, which FDA labels for nasolabial folds (the lines running from your nose to the corners of your mouth). SKINVIVE has FDA approval to smooth the cheeks and soften neck lines in adults over 21.

Can a skin booster fix sagging, or only texture?

A skin booster mainly works on texture. It isn't built to lift sag. "Skin booster" is a catch-all name for injectables meant to improve skin quality, used for dullness, fine lines and skin that has lost its bounce. Boosters don't add the contouring volume that props up a face.

Women often run into this in their mid-30s. In a thread on r/30PlusSkinCare, a 37-year-old with about ten years of tretinoin and daily SPF 50 asked, "Does this look like skin laxity, volume loss, or both?" She listed Profhilo, Radiesse and polynucleotides as options. The most upvoted reply said:

"It's just normal at this age. Microneedleing has helped mine but it won't remove them. It is a bit of an awkward age because we're too young for facelifts but no amount of creams and "drink more water" suggestions will stop volume loss."

Sculptra works differently from a booster. It is poly-L-lactic acid injected into the deep dermis, the lower layer of skin. FDA labels it for shallow to deep nasolabial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles.

Here's a quick way to sort it out. If what bugs you is how your skin looks up close (rough, dull, crepey, lined), you are in booster territory. If what bugs you is heaviness or deepening folds around your mouth, ask your injector about volume, not a booster.

Which skin booster is best for which skin problem?

Each one is labeled or studied for a different job. Match the job to your complaint.

Injectable What it is Labeled or studied for How it's given
SKINVIVE by Juvéderm Hyaluronic acid gel with BDDE and 0.3% lidocaine, a numbing agent that reduces injection pain (FDA) FDA-approved for injection into the skin to improve cheek smoothness, and into or just under the skin to reduce neck lines, in adults over 21 (FDA approval letter). In a study of 209 people, the smoother cheeks lasted at least six months (FDA). Injected into the skin (cheeks), or into or just under the skin (neck)
Profhilo A mix of high and low molecular weight hyaluronic acid Studied for hydration, elasticity, firmness and density on the face, neck, inner arms, abdomen, knees and hands, plus wrinkles and facial volume loss on the face Injection by a clinician
Polynucleotides (Rejuran) Long DNA fragments from salmon or trout Used by doctors for hydration and texture, structural support, redness in rosacea and eczema, and scars For skin hydration, the authors' clinics usually give three sessions four weeks apart
Sculptra (for comparison, not a booster) Poly-L-lactic acid microparticles FDA-labeled for nasolabial folds and facial wrinkles (FDA label) Injected into the deep dermis. In the US study, people got up to four sessions over nine weeks (FDA label)

Which skin booster has the strongest research behind it?

SKINVIVE is the easiest to judge in the US because FDA approved it for two specific jobs, cheek smoothness and neck lines. You know what it was approved to do and where. That still doesn't make it the best booster for you. None of the research here shows one booster beating another.

Profhilo has been studied on the most body areas. A review pooled nine studies with 278 people and found improvements in elasticity, hydration, density and laxity, plus better wrinkle and facial volume scores on the face. Two details matter. All five authors work for IBSA, the company that makes Profhilo. And some of the results were trends toward improvement rather than statistically clear changes.

Polynucleotides have the least settled evidence of the boosters. The main paper is an expert opinion piece, one author works for PharmaResearch (the company that makes Rejuran), and the authors say randomized trials and long-term data are still needed. In one small split-face trial of 27 people, elasticity and skin tone improved on both sides of the face, the polynucleotide side and the hyaluronic acid side. That trial does not show either one beat the other.

Sculptra's change is real but modest. In the US study, the best correction at nine weeks was most often a half-point to one-point improvement on a six-point wrinkle scale. Safety and results beyond 25 months after the last injection have not been studied in clinical trials.

Do skin booster injections hurt, and what can go wrong?

Yes, they sting. Boosters are usually given as many tiny shots into the top layer of skin, which is packed with nerve endings. Expect sharp stinging and small raised bumps that fade. Bruises and bumps tend to show more on the neck and other thin-skinned areas than on the cheeks.

Across the Profhilo studies, side effects were bruising, swelling, a light pinching feeling, a small bump and small pockets of blood under the skin. These were mild and usually gone within 72 hours.

Injecting deeper to hurt less is not automatically safer. Deeper layers of the face can hold larger blood vessels, and hyaluronic acid injected into a blood vessel can block it and cause serious complications. Your injector's knowledge of facial anatomy matters at any depth.

SKINVIVE is prescription-only. Under FDA's June 2026 approval, Allergan may only supply it to providers who have completed its device training on facial anatomy and blood vessels, safe injection and handling complications, including injection into a blood vessel. Ask your injector whether they finished that training.

SKINVIVE is not for you if you have severe allergies with a history of anaphylaxis, multiple severe allergies, an allergy to gram-positive bacterial proteins, or a lidocaine allergy. Sculptra can cause small lumps under the skin that show up days to months after injection and take a long time to go away.

How much do skin boosters cost?

Expect to pay per session, for several sessions. A Seoul-based beauty blog puts Profhilo at $800 to $1,200 per session in the US and Europe, and ₩300,000 to ₩500,000 per session in Seoul. These are the blog's estimates, not clinic quotes, so ask your clinic for a written price.

The same blog lists Rejuran at ₩200,000 to ₩300,000 per session in Seoul. Seoul clinics market booster trips heavily to American women, so read their price comparisons as sales pages.

Boosters come as a series, not a one-off. Before you book, ask for the total cost of the first round plus a year of top-ups. Compare clinics on that number, not the per-session price.

You want skin that looks smoother and brighter every day, not only in the weeks after an injector visit. Take the quiz so your clinical team can see whether a prescription skin plan, such as tretinoin or GHK-Cu copper peptide, fits your skin goal.

FAQ

Is Profhilo better than SKINVIVE?

Neither one has been shown to be better than the other, and the two have not been compared head to head. SKINVIVE is FDA-approved to smooth the cheeks and reduce neck lines in adults over 21, and the smoother cheeks lasted at least six months. Profhilo is a mix of hyaluronic acids used for hydration, elasticity and firmness on the face, neck, inner arms, abdomen, knees and hands, though the main review of it was written by authors who work for its maker. Pick based on the area and the problem you want to treat.

How long do skin booster results last?

SKINVIVE's smoother cheeks lasted at least six months. Boosters come as a series rather than a one-off, so plan for a first round of sessions followed by top-ups. Polynucleotides for skin hydration are usually given as three sessions four weeks apart. Ask your clinic for the total cost of the first round plus a year of top-ups.

Are salmon DNA injections safe?

Salmon DNA injections (polynucleotides, sold as Rejuran) have the least settled evidence of the skin boosters, and long-term data are still needed. Like other boosters, they are given as tiny shots into the skin, which can sting and leave small bumps or bruises that fade. Your injector's knowledge of facial anatomy matters at any injection depth.

Do skin boosters work on crepey neck skin?

Yes, crepey skin and neck lines are the kind of problem skin boosters are built for. SKINVIVE is FDA-approved for injection into or just under the skin to reduce neck lines in adults over 21, and Profhilo has been used on the neck for hydration, elasticity and firmness. Bruises and bumps tend to show more on the neck than on the cheeks, so plan for that after a session.
