Best Treatments for a Double Chin

What are the best treatments for a Double Chin, and which one fits me?

Quick answer

The best double chin treatment depends on the cause: fat under the chin, loose skin or extra weight. For chin fat, the options are Kybella (an FDA-approved fat-dissolving injection), CoolSculpting (fat freezing without needles) and chin liposuction (surgery), while loose skin and neck bands don't respond to fat-dissolving shots. If extra weight is part of the cause, reaching a steady weight first protects the result you pay for.

Key takeaways

  • Find out whether your double chin comes from fat, loose skin or extra weight before you pay for anything, because fat-dissolving shots like Kybella don't fix loose skin or neck bands.
  • Kybella averages $1,640 per treatment nationally according to CareCredit's cost guide, while one New York plastic surgery practice lists CoolSculpting at $500 to $800 per session and chin liposuction at $2,000 to $5,000 before anesthesia and facility fees.
  • Fat-dissolving injections tend to shrink chin fat the most, followed by fat freezing, though the treatments have never been tested against each other.
  • Kybella suits a defined pocket of soft chin fat, and you should expect a swollen, sore, numb chin for a week or two after each round, with an occasional temporary uneven smile that goes away on its own.
  • Loose skin, neck bands or sagging jowls call for a surgical consult, and if extra weight is part of the picture, reaching a steady weight first protects what you pay for.

The best double chin treatment depends on what is making the fullness: fat under the chin, loose skin, or extra weight overall. For chin fat, Kybella (deoxycholic acid) is the FDA-approved injection, CoolSculpting freezes fat without needles, and chin liposuction removes it in surgery. Loose skin and neck bands don't respond to fat-dissolving shots. No trial has compared all three directly, so the right one comes down to your cause, your budget and how much downtime you can take.

Is my double chin fat, loose skin or weight?

A double chin can come from genetics, extra weight or aging, according to CareCredit's Kybella cost guide. The cause decides which treatment can help, so it is worth knowing yours before you spend anything.

Fat-dissolving injections like Kybella target fat cells, not skin. If your skin is loose or has lost its tone, you may not be a candidate, and non-surgical skin tightening or a neck lift may fit better.

Plastic surgeons who reviewed Kybella's serious side effects go further. They advise against using it when the fullness comes from loose skin or from platysma diastasis, where the two bands of the thin muscle at the front of your neck separate and show as cords. Fullness from large salivary glands, fat that sits under that neck muscle, or a bulky muscle under the jaw doesn't fully improve with Kybella either.

Women in their 30s ask this exact question when the lower face starts to change. One 37-year-old in r/30PlusSkinCare, posting about lower face sagging despite years of tretinoin, SPF and a healthy lifestyle, asked, "Does this look like skin laxity, volume loss, or both?" Skin laxity means loose skin, and it is the right question to settle first.

Before anyone quotes you vials or sessions, ask them to examine you and say out loud what is causing your fullness. If they can't tell you, don't book.

How do Kybella, CoolSculpting and chin lipo compare?

How it works Number of sessions When you see a change Downtime Typical cost
Kybella A series of injections that kill fat cells under the chin Up to 6, given at least 1 month apart. Most people are happy after 2 to 4 About 4 to 6 weeks after a treatment Swelling is most noticeable for 5 to 14 days $1,640 national average per treatment (range $1,267 to $3,215), usually 2 to 3 vials at an average of $640 each. Insurance typically doesn't cover it
CoolSculpting Cools and freezes fat cells, which your body clears over time 1 to 2 chin sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart Some change at 2 to 4 weeks, final results at 1 to 2 months, per the practice None needed, per the practice $500 to $800 per session, per one New York plastic surgery practice
Chin liposuction A surgeon removes fat through small incisions with a thin tube One 1 to 2 hour procedure Right away, with final results after about 6 weeks, per the practice Most people return to work around day 5 to 7 $2,000 to $5,000, not including anesthesia and facility fees, per the same practice

The Kybella price is per treatment, not per result. Two treatments at the average price come to about $3,280.

On fat reduction, a 2026 review of 19 studies covering 1,193 people found injectable fat dissolvers had the largest average drop in chin fat thickness (7.41 mm). Radiofrequency came next (3.97 mm), then cryolipolysis, the technique behind CoolSculpting (2.79 mm), then laser (0.96 mm). The authors call the evidence inconclusive on which is better, because no trials compared them head to head.

Liposuction and surgical chin tightening have long been the standard surgeries for chin fat. They carry risks and real downtime, which is why so many women look at injections and freezing first.

How well does Kybella work, and what are the side effects?

Kybella has the strongest trial record of the three. In two placebo-controlled trials of adults aged 19 to 65 with moderate to severe chin fullness, 43% of people on Kybella had at least a 10% drop in chin fat volume on MRI, compared with 5% on placebo.

Expect a puffy, sore, numb chin for a while. In those trials:

  • Swelling: 87% on Kybella vs 43% on placebo
  • Bruising: 72% vs 70%
  • Pain: 70% vs 32%
  • Numbness: 66% vs 6%

About 4% of people on Kybella had a nerve injury that caused an uneven smile. Every case in the trials went away without treatment, with a median recovery of 44 days (range 1 to 298 days).

Trouble swallowing happened in 2% of people on Kybella. The label says to avoid it if you already have trouble swallowing, to use it with caution if you take blood thinners, and not to use it if there is an infection in the area. Tell your injector if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, because its effects there aren't known.

Kybella is approved only for fat under the chin. Serious reactions have been reported when it was injected elsewhere, including blurred vision after use near the eyes and lumps that may not go away. Say no if anyone offers it for your jowls or face.

Rare serious problems have also been reported to the FDA, including skin breakdown that needed surgery. The two people who were hospitalized were suspected to have serious underlying illnesses (lupus and leukemia), so give your injector your full health history.

Which double chin treatment fits me?

If you have a defined pocket of soft fat under your chin and can live with a week or two of swelling per round, Kybella has the most trial evidence. It is approved for moderate to severe fullness from chin fat in adults.

If needles put you off, CoolSculpting avoids them. In the 2026 review, no side effects were reported in the cryolipolysis, radiofrequency or laser studies, while fat-dissolving injections had a 7% side effect rate. CoolSculpting's average fat reduction was smaller than the injections', though the two haven't been tested against each other.

If loose skin, neck bands or sagging jowls are part of the picture, book a surgical consult. Surgery is the better route for jowls caused by sagging.

If extra weight is part of it, think about timing. Kybella results last as long as your weight stays stable, so reaching a steady weight first protects what you pay for.

Kybella, CoolSculpting and liposuction are done in person by an injector or surgeon, not through Hot or Nothing. When you book a consult, ask for the full-treatment price across every session, not a per-vial price.

If extra weight is part of your double chin, take the quiz. Our clinical team will look at whether a weight plan with semaglutide or tirzepatide fits your goal, so you start any chin treatment at a weight you can hold.

FAQ

Is Kybella permanent?

Kybella results last as long as your weight stays stable. The injections kill fat cells under the chin, so reaching a steady weight before you start protects what you pay for. If extra weight is part of your double chin, sort out the timing first.

How many Kybella sessions do I need for a double chin?

Most people are happy with their Kybella results after 2 to 4 treatments, and you can have up to 6. Treatments are given at least a month apart, and you should see a change about 4 to 6 weeks after each one. At CareCredit's national average of $1,640 per treatment, two treatments come to about $3,280, so ask for the full-treatment price across every session.

Can losing weight get rid of a double chin?

Losing weight can help when extra weight is part of what makes your chin full, since a double chin can come from extra weight, genetics or aging. Reaching a steady weight first also protects any chin treatment you pay for, because Kybella results last as long as your weight stays stable. Take the quiz to see whether a weight plan with semaglutide or tirzepatide fits your goal.

Does Kybella make the skin under your chin saggy?

Kybella won't tighten the skin under your chin, because it targets fat cells, not skin. If your skin is already loose or has lost its tone, you may not be a candidate, and non-surgical skin tightening or a neck lift may fit better. Ask your injector to examine you and say what is causing your fullness before you book.
