Quick answer

For dark unwanted chin hair, laser hair removal is the place to start: it leaves you with fewer chin hairs for the long term after several sessions, and InjectCo in Texas lists chin-only laser at $75 to $150 a session. If your chin hair is hormonal, as with PCOS, laser works better when paired with the birth control pill or metformin. Spironolactone pills slow regrowth from the hormone side but can take about four months or longer to help, and the FDA-approved eflornithine cream, Vaniqa, is no longer sold in the US.

Key takeaways

  • Laser hair removal gives you fewer chin hairs for the long term, but it takes several sessions, and sticking with more sessions gets you more reduction.
  • Laser works best on dark chin hair, so if your hairs are gray, white or blonde, or your skin is darker, ask the clinic what results to expect before you buy a package.
  • If your chin hair comes with PCOS, laser still helps, and pairing it with the birth control pill or metformin worked better than laser alone.
  • Spironolactone pills work on the hormone side but take months to help with chin hair, side effects such as period changes are common, and you cannot take it while pregnant or trying to get pregnant.
  • Eflornithine cream slows regrowth rather than removing hair, the FDA-approved brand Vaniqa is discontinued in the US, and its best use may be alongside laser.

The best treatment for unwanted chin hair depends on whether you want the hairs you have gone or want fewer growing back. Laser hair removal has controlled trials showing long-term reduction of chin hair, and it takes several sessions. When chin hair is driven by hormones, as with PCOS, studies found laser combined with a second treatment worked better than laser alone.

Start with laser if your chin hairs are dark and you want fewer of them for the long term. Add a second treatment if your hair seems hormonal: the birth control pill or metformin if you have PCOS, or eflornithine cream to slow regrowth, if you can get it. Spironolactone is the slow route and needs months of patience.

Which chin hair treatment works best for women?

Treatment What it does When you see a change What it costs The main catch Who it fits
Laser hair removal Targets the hairs and follicles you have now Reduction builds over several sessions. The FDA-approved brand, Vaniqa, is discontinued in the US Hair comes back about eight weeks after you stop, and you still shave or pluck while using it Women who want slower regrowth, especially alongside laser

Does laser hair removal get rid of chin hair for good?

Laser reduces chin hair over the long term, but one visit will not clear it. A review of laser and light hair removal found diode laser worked significantly better than shaving in both short-term and long-term studies. In one 12-month comparison of 15 people, four sessions of alexandrite laser cut hair by 85% and four sessions of diode laser cut it by 84%.

More sessions mean more reduction. In one study, two diode sessions cut hair by 34 to 53%, while one session cut it by 28 to 33%, at an average follow-up of 20 months. In women with facial hair, four ruby laser sessions gave a 61% average reduction, against 42% for one session. So if you bail after your first appointment, you are leaving a lot of results on the table.

Laser also beat electrolysis in one small study. In that nonrandomized study of 12 people, three alexandrite laser sessions cut hair by an average of 74% six months after the first treatment, while four electrolysis sessions cut it by 35%.

Hair color, skin tone, hair thickness and hormone problems all change how well laser works. If your chin hairs are gray, white or blonde, or your skin is darker, ask the clinic what results to expect before you buy a package. In darker skin, lighter patches (hypopigmentation) were the most commonly reported side effect with ruby laser.

On cost, InjectCo, a Texas clinic chain, lists chin-only laser at $75 to $150 a session. It quotes 6 to 8 sessions and $450 to $1,200 for a chin-only series.

What if my chin hair is hormonal or from PCOS?

Laser still helps when your chin hair comes with PCOS. A 2024 JAMA Dermatology review of six studies (423 patients with PCOS) found that laser and light treatments made the hair less severe. Women also felt better about themselves and their quality of life improved. Side effects were generally tolerable.

Adding a second treatment did better. In women with PCOS, diode laser combined with the combined birth control pill or with metformin worked better than diode laser alone. Metformin plus IPL also beat IPL alone. IPL is the flashlamp treatment many spas sell, and alexandrite laser was more effective than IPL. If you are choosing where to book, that difference matters.

The review rated the evidence as low certainty. It found few studies in women with darker skin, and the studies measured results in different ways. That makes the combination a strong lead, not a guarantee. The findings still shaped the 2023 international PCOS guideline, which now includes recommendations on laser and light hair reduction for women with PCOS and unwanted hair.

If your chin hair arrived along with irregular periods or other hormone changes, tell your clinical team. That history changes which combination makes sense for you.

Does spironolactone stop chin hair from growing?

Spironolactone slows chin hair from the hormone side, but it takes time. It lowers production of androgens (male-type hormones) and blocks their effect at the skin. In a study of women taking 200 mg a day, those treated for unwanted hair did not improve until after 4 months. Acne patients improved within 3 months. This is the patient route.

Side effects are common. In that study of 54 patients aged 21 to 51, 91% had some side effect. Period changes were the most common, in 72%. Dry skin came up in 39%, and some women reported larger, sore breasts. Even so, only 7 patients (13%) stopped taking it. The 23 who also took a birth control pill had fewer period and other gynecologic problems.

Dose makes a difference. In a separate study of 16 premenopausal women taking 100 mg twice a day, 11 had to lower the dose or stop. Nine had bleeding every 14 days. On 50 mg twice a day, 2 of 10 women had that bleeding. The authors recommended starting at 50 mg twice a day.

You cannot take spironolactone while pregnant or trying to get pregnant, because it can affect the development of a male baby.

On price, Oana Health, an online clinic, lists spironolactone at $83 a quarter for new patients on the standard 50 mg dose. That works out to about $28 a month, with free shipping.

Can you still get Vaniqa cream for chin hair?

Not the FDA-approved brand in the US. Vaniqa has been discontinued there. You may find other eflornithine creams for sale, but the FDA has not reviewed or approved them for safety or effectiveness.

Where you can get it, eflornithine is a slow, ongoing cream for the face and under the chin. It slows hair growth by blocking an enzyme the hair follicle uses to grow. You may need up to eight weeks to see a change, and if nothing has improved after six months, you stop. You still shave or pluck while using it, and the hair likely goes back to how it looked about eight weeks after you stop. Common side effects include acne, razor bumps, rash, stinging, burning, redness, tingling and itching.

Its best use may be alongside laser. A randomized trial in women with facial hair compared the cream plus laser against laser alone. The researchers reported that the combination removed unwanted facial hair more effectively than laser alone.

FAQ

how many laser sessions for chin hair

Most women need about 6 to 8 laser sessions for chin hair, according to InjectCo, a Texas clinic chain. InjectCo spaces sessions 4 to 6 weeks apart and says women with PCOS or other hormonal causes may need more sessions plus occasional top-up visits. Research on laser hair removal found that more sessions gave more reduction than a single session, so one appointment will not clear your chin.

does laser work on gray chin hair

Laser usually works poorly on gray chin hair, because the laser aims at the dark color in the hair and gray, white and blonde hairs have little of it. InjectCo says results on these lighter hairs may be limited and only partial. InjectCo also notes that electrolysis, which treats hairs one at a time, can work on any hair color, though sessions take longer and cost more per area. Ask the clinic what results to expect before you buy a package.

how long does spironolactone take to work for facial hair

Spironolactone took more than four months to help with unwanted hair in a study of women taking 200 mg a day. In the same study, women taking it for acne improved within three months, so hair is the slower result. Side effects such as period changes tended to show up early, and the researchers advised regular check-ins during the first three months. Spironolactone is not an option while you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.

can you use eflornithine cream with laser hair removal

Yes, eflornithine cream can be used alongside laser, and a randomized trial in women with facial hair reported that the cream plus laser removed unwanted hair more effectively than laser alone. The cream slows regrowth but does not remove hair, so you still shave or pluck while using it. The FDA-approved brand, Vaniqa, is discontinued in the US, and other eflornithine creams have not been reviewed or approved by the FDA. Tell your clinical team if you plan to combine the two.
