Quick answer
Neither glutathione injections nor liposomal glutathione has been shown to work better, because nobody has compared the two head to head. Liposomal glutathione taken by mouth every day has early human evidence of raising glutathione levels in blood and immune cells within one to two weeks, and it costs a median of $41.99 a month at 500 mg a day across products tracked by TrueServing. Glutathione injections have no measured data on raising levels, cost $99 a month from telehealth seller Try Nova (or $75 a month for the first three months on a three-month plan, then $85, including consultation, medication, supplies and shipping), and IV glutathione was the subject of an FDA safety alert in August 2026.

Key takeaways
- Nobody has measured glutathione injections and liposomal glutathione side by side, so neither has been shown to get more into your body.
- Liposomal glutathione taken by mouth every day raised glutathione levels after one week, with the biggest rise at two weeks, and levels from plain glutathione pills slid back to where they started a month after stopping, so plan on taking it daily.
- There is little convincing evidence that glutathione pills or IV glutathione lighten skin or fade dark spots.
- IV glutathione carries risks capsules do not: in August 2026 FDA reported at least 30 people with fever, chills and sepsis-like symptoms after compounded IV glutathione, and some were hospitalized.
- Liposomal glutathione usually costs less, a median of $41.99 a month at 500 mg a day across products tracked by TrueServing, while Try Nova's glutathione injection costs $99 a month, or $75 a month for the first three months on a three-month plan and $85 after that, including consultation, medication, supplies and shipping.
No published study has compared glutathione injections directly with oral liposomal glutathione, so neither one has been shown to work better. Liposomal glutathione taken by mouth has small human studies showing that glutathione levels in blood and immune cells go up within one to two weeks. Glutathione injections get past the gut but lack that kind of measured data. They also cost more: $75 to $99 a month from one telehealth seller, against a median of about $42 a month for liposomal supplements. And IV glutathione was the subject of an FDA safety alert in August 2026.
Does a glutathione injection get more into your body than liposomal glutathione?
Nobody knows yet. None of the studies here measured injected and liposomal glutathione side by side. A page that calls the shot "more effective than oral" is guessing.
The case for the shot is your gut. Your gut contains a lot of an enzyme called GGT, which breaks glutathione down and may stop it from being absorbed intact. That is why researchers long assumed plain glutathione pills were poorly absorbed. Injections skip the gut, and researchers have used IV and intramuscular glutathione to raise glutathione levels in the blood.
Liposomal glutathione gets around the same problem a different way. It wraps glutathione in a tiny fat bubble (a liposome) that protects it in the gut. A small study of one branded liposomal product gave 12 healthy adults a single 1 g dose of liposomal or plain glutathione, with six people in each group. In the liposomal group, the peak blood level was about 1,800 ng/ml, roughly 6 times higher than with plain glutathione. It was still above 500 ng/ml 24 hours later.
Injection makers recommend IV glutathione for fast results, usually 600 to 1,200 mg once or twice a week with no set end date. A 2018 dermatology review found that the evidence IV glutathione works is still lacking. Nobody has worked out how long a course should last or whether the results hold.
Does oral liposomal glutathione raise your glutathione levels?
Yes, in a small study. In a one-month liposomal pilot, 12 healthy adults took 500 or 1,000 mg a day. Their levels rose after one week and peaked at two weeks. The two doses worked about the same, though the study was too small to rule out a difference, and it had no placebo group. Plain glutathione pills also raised levels in a six-month placebo-controlled trial, but only with time. In a four-week trial of plain glutathione, levels did not change compared with placebo.
| Form | Daily dose | How long | What happened to glutathione levels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liposomal glutathione | 500 or 1,000 mg | 1 month | Rose after 1 week. Peak at 2 weeks: up 40% in whole blood, 25% in red blood cells, 28% in plasma and 100% in immune cells. No placebo group. |
| Plain oral glutathione | 1,000 mg | 6 months | 30 to 35% above starting levels in red blood cells, plasma and immune cells, and 260% higher in cheek cells |
| Plain oral glutathione | 500 mg twice a day | 4 weeks | No change compared with placebo |
| Glutathione injection | 600 to 1,200 mg once or twice a week (manufacturer recommendation) | No set duration | No measured human data in these studies |
Does more glutathione mean better protection for your cells?
In the liposomal pilot, higher glutathione levels came with signs of less cell stress and stronger immune activity. A blood marker of oxidative damage fell 35%. By week two, the killing activity of natural killer cells (immune cells that clear infected or damaged cells) rose by up to 400%, and immune cells multiplied up to 60% more when stimulated.
In the six-month trial, natural killer cell activity more than doubled compared with placebo after three months on 1,000 mg a day of plain glutathione. One month after people stopped, their glutathione levels were back where they started. If you want higher levels, plan on taking it every day.
Whether any of this shows up in your skin is less clear. In two small trials, 500 mg a day of oral glutathione lowered a measured melanin index (a reading of skin pigment). In one of those trials, the drop beat placebo at 2 of the 6 skin sites measured. The 2018 dermatology review concluded there is little convincing evidence for glutathione as a treatment for dark spots or uneven tone, because the trials were small and short.
IV glutathione did no better for skin tone. The one placebo-controlled IV trial gave 1,200 mg twice a week for six weeks, compared with saline. The results did not support IV glutathione as an effective or lasting skin lightener. That trial had a high dropout rate and relied on subjective scoring.
Are glutathione injections safe?
They carry risks that capsules do not. On August 27, 2026, FDA reported that at least 30 people had fever, chills, pain, dizziness, signs of shock and sepsis-like symptoms after IV glutathione. Some were hospitalized. The injections were compounded from a dietary-supplement-grade glutathione ingredient (Medisca Lot #229536). Two Texas pharmacies recalled glutathione injectables because they contained high levels of endotoxin, a toxin released by bacteria.
FDA told health care professionals to check where their compounding pharmacy gets its glutathione. It told consumers with concerns to talk to their health care professional. If a clinic offers you a glutathione shot, ask which pharmacy makes it and where that pharmacy sources its glutathione.
Compounded glutathione injections are not FDA-approved. FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are sold. Telehealth seller Try Nova states this on its own glutathione injection page.
Oral glutathione supplements have GRAS status (generally recognized as safe) from FDA. The 2018 review lists serious problems linked to IV glutathione: air embolism, blood-borne infections and potentially fatal sepsis. These came from poor injection technique, unsterile or reused needles, and counterfeit product.
How much do glutathione injections cost compared with liposomal glutathione?
Liposomal glutathione usually costs less. Across 64 products tracked by TrueServing, a month at 500 mg a day costs a median of $41.99, with a range of $2.60 to $624.94. Some blends list only a small amount of glutathione, so compare the glutathione per serving, not the bottle price.
Try Nova sells a glutathione injection (a 10 mL vial at 200 mg/mL) for $99 a month on a monthly plan. On a three-month plan, it costs $75 a month for the first three months and $85 a month after that. The price includes the consultation, the medication, supplies and shipping.
| Form | Typical monthly cost | How you take it | What the research has measured |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liposomal capsules or liquid | Median $41.99 at 500 mg a day, range $2.60 to $624.94 (TrueServing, 64 products) | By mouth, daily | In small studies, blood and immune cell levels rose within 1 to 2 weeks, along with signs of less cell stress and stronger immune activity |
| Glutathione injection | $99 a month, or $75 a month for 3 months on a 3-month plan and then $85 (Try Nova, includes consultation, medication, supplies and shipping) | Injection from a 10 mL vial, 200 mg/mL | No measured human data on glutathione levels in these studies. One IV skin trial did not show effective or lasting lightening |

How long does liposomal glutathione take to work?
Liposomal glutathione raised glutathione levels in the blood after about one week of daily use, with the biggest rise at two weeks. That comes from a small one-month study in 12 healthy adults taking 500 or 1,000 mg a day, and it had no placebo group. Whether higher levels show up in your skin or energy is less clear.
What happens when you stop taking glutathione?
Your glutathione levels drift back to where they started. In a six-month trial of plain glutathione pills, levels were back to baseline one month after people stopped. If you want higher levels, plan on taking it every day.
Does glutathione lighten your skin?
There is little convincing evidence that it does. In two small trials, 500 mg a day of oral glutathione lowered a measured reading of skin pigment, but in one of them the drop beat placebo at only 2 of 6 skin sites, and a 2018 dermatology review found the trials too small and short to be convincing. The one placebo-controlled IV trial did not support IV glutathione as an effective or lasting skin lightener.
Is subcutaneous glutathione the same as IV glutathione?
Not quite: a subcutaneous shot goes under the skin, while IV glutathione goes straight into a vein, though both skip the gut. The research here did not measure glutathione levels from either kind of shot, and the FDA's August 2026 alert was about IV glutathione. Compounded glutathione injections are not FDA-approved, so if a clinic offers you one, ask which pharmacy makes it and where that pharmacy sources its glutathione.
