Quick answer

Glutathione injections have not been shown to brighten skin or detox the liver. Any lightening from glutathione injections was small, no better than a fake injection, and faded within about six months of stopping, and the liver results came from glutathione pills in people with fatty liver disease. Glutathione pills and glutathione lotion have shown better results for skin tone, while the injections carry safety warnings that include liver problems and severe allergic reactions.

Key takeaways

  • Glutathione injections lightened skin no better than a fake injection, the small change faded within six months, and lighter skin is all they were measured on, not glow, firmness or smoother texture.
  • For more even skin tone, glutathione pills and a glutathione lotion have shown better results than the injections, and the lotion also left skin softer and more moisturized.
  • There's no evidence glutathione injections detox the liver, since your liver makes its own glutathione and the early liver results came from glutathione pills in people with fatty liver disease.
  • Glutathione injections carry more risk than the pills or the lotion, including liver problems and a severe allergic reaction, and the Philippine FDA has warned the public against them for skin lightening.
  • If you want glow, smoother texture or more even tone after 40, put the drip budget toward a skin plan, and your clinical team can see whether tretinoin, GHK-Cu copper peptide or NAD+ face cream fits your goal.

Glutathione injections have not been shown to brighten skin or detox the liver in women over 40. In the one placebo-controlled trial of injections for skin, results were no better than placebo, and the small changes faded within six months. The liver studies used glutathione pills in people with fatty liver disease. Glutathione taken by mouth or used as a lotion has better small-trial results for skin tone, and the injections come with real safety warnings.

What do glutathione injections do for your skin?

Not much, and the change doesn't last. In a placebo-controlled trial of glutathione injections, 6 of 16 people had lighter skin after 12 injections, compared with 3 of 16 on placebo. The difference between the two groups was not statistically significant, so the trial could not show that the injections did better than the placebo.

The trial dose was 1,200 mg of glutathione twice a week for six weeks. Within six months of the last injection, the changes had faded for everyone except 1 of the 16 people.

These trials measured melanin, the pigment that makes skin darker. A lower score means lighter skin. It does not mean glow, firmness or smoother texture. Clinics often sell the drip as "radiance," so decide whether lighter skin is what you want before you pay for it.

There is also very little safety research behind the injections. A 2016 safety review found no studies of glutathione injections for skin lightening. It also found no studies on the safety of using them long term for any reason.

Is glutathione better as a shot, a pill or a cream?

For skin tone, the pill and the lotion have better small-trial results than the injection.

Form What happened in the trials Side effects
Injection No significant difference from placebo, and results faded within six months (review of systemic glutathione) Common. Glutathione was well tolerated as a pill but not as an injection (see the safety section)
By mouth In a placebo-controlled trial, 500 mg a day lowered melanin in sun-exposed areas such as the face after four weeks. A different trial found no change, so results are mixed (narrative review) Mild stomach upsets, such as gas and loose stools, that went away on their own
Lotion In a placebo-controlled trial, a 2% glutathione lotion used twice a day for 10 weeks lowered melanin more than placebo and improved skin moisture and texture (narrative review) None listed in the trial findings

Another glutathione trial, one that did not use injections, gave the only results for women your age. The group was very small: 7 women over 40 took glutathione and 10 took a placebo. The glutathione group had a lower melanin score on a sun-exposed forearm (review of systemic glutathione).

That trial also found better skin elasticity, and fewer wrinkles than placebo in some spots on the face. With pills or injections, your skin color goes back to how it was after you stop.

Do glutathione injections detox your liver?

There's no evidence that they do. None of the studies behind this article tested glutathione injections for liver detox in healthy women. Your liver already makes glutathione and is the main source of it in your blood.

The liver evidence comes from three small studies of 109 people with fatty liver disease. They took 300 mg of glutathione by mouth each day for three to four months, and none of the studies had a placebo group. ALT, a liver enzyme that rises when liver cells are damaged, dropped significantly in two of the three studies. The reviewers called these results preliminary and said clinical recommendations should wait for better trials.

Injectable glutathione is approved in the Philippines, but only alongside the chemotherapy drug cisplatin. The Philippine FDA has not approved any injectable glutathione for skin lightening.

Liver problems were also among the side effects in the injection skin trial. That's an odd trade for a treatment sold as a liver cleanse.

Are glutathione injections safe?

They carry more risk than the pill or the lotion. In the injection skin trial, about a third of people (32%) had side effects, including liver problems and one case of anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction.

The Philippine FDA has warned the public against glutathione injections for skin whitening. Its 2011 warning cites reports of rashes, Stevens-Johnson syndrome (a severe, potentially fatal reaction of the skin and mucous membranes), thyroid changes and suspected kidney problems. It also said there was too little safety data for the high doses being given, 600 mg to 1.2 g once or twice a week.

In the US, doctors reported a 33-year-old woman who developed Stevens-Johnson syndrome after an IV vitamin drip containing glutathione, vitamin C and vitamin D. They pointed to the rise of loosely regulated IV hydration clinics.

Glutathione also shifts your skin toward a lighter, red type of melanin. Researchers say that shift could raise the risk of skin cancer from sun exposure. This is a theoretical concern and has not been shown.

Most glutathione injections in the US are compounded rather than FDA-approved, so their quality depends on the pharmacy that made them.

Is glutathione worth the money for brighter skin after 40?

Not as an injection. A glutathione IV drip at a med spa or clinic runs about $150 to $400 a session. Telehealth subscriptions that ship vials for home injection run about $200 a month.

Clinics often give 600 mg to 1,400 mg per IV session, one to three times a week. At those prices, the cost adds up fast, and the results fade once you stop.

Maybe you want glow, smoother texture or more even tone rather than lighter skin. If so, put that budget toward a skin plan built around that goal instead of a drip that was measured only by how light your skin gets. Our clinical team can prescribe tretinoin, GHK-Cu copper peptide or NAD+ face cream if one fits your skin goal.

If you want brighter, firmer skin after 40 without paying for a drip that fades, take the quiz. Your clinical team will look at your goals and see whether tretinoin, GHK-Cu or NAD+ face cream fits your plan.

FAQ

How long do glutathione injection results last?

Results from glutathione injections fade within about six months of the last injection for nearly everyone. With pills or injections, your skin color goes back to how it was once you stop. That means paying for repeat sessions to hold on to a change that was small to begin with.

Does glutathione lighten your whole body?

No, glutathione does not lighten skin evenly all over. Glutathione pills lowered melanin, the pigment that darkens skin, mainly in sun-exposed areas such as the face and forearm. Glutathione injections did no better than a fake injection on the upper arm and thigh, and reviewers concluded glutathione works only on some parts of the body.

Do you need sunscreen while taking glutathione?

Yes, sun protection matters while taking glutathione. Glutathione shifts skin toward a lighter, red type of melanin, and researchers say that shift could raise the risk of skin cancer from sun exposure, though this has not been shown. Reviewers also advise against long-term glutathione use for anyone who does not keep up with sun protection and sunscreen.

Is glutathione cream worth trying for dark spots?

Glutathione cream has some of the better early results for skin tone. A 2% glutathione lotion used twice a day for 10 weeks lowered melanin more than a dummy lotion and also improved skin moisture and texture, with no side effects listed. Researchers say glutathione on the skin still needs more study for dark patches, and your clinical team can see whether tretinoin, GHK-Cu or NAD+ face cream fits your goal for more even tone.
