How Do Semax and Selank Differ?

Semax was studied for thinking, attention and recovery after stroke from blocked blood flow, while Selank was studied for anxiety and the drained fatigue that often comes with it. Both are Russian-developed nasal peptides made of seven amino acids, built from different starting pieces and tied to different brain signals. They answer different research questions and remain background science.

What was each peptide studied for?

Both peptides came from the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and share the same stabilizing tail, three amino acids called Pro-Gly-Pro, and both were given through the nose in research origin and structure. Semax starts from a short piece of ACTH, a stress hormone made by the pituitary, but researchers built it to study brain support without hormonal action. Selank starts from tuftsin, a short piece of an immune protein, and researchers built it to study calming effects alongside immune signaling. In practice, Semax research centers on cognition, protection of brain cells, and recovery after blocked blood flow, with interest in BDNF, a protein linked to growth and upkeep of brain cells studied-uses split. What did the main human studies observe?

In a Russian trial of 62 people with generalized anxiety disorder and neurasthenia, 30 received Selank and 32 received medazepam, a benzodiazepine for anxiety. Anxiety scores on the Hamilton, Zung, and CGI rating scales fell in a similar way in both groups, but the Selank group also reported less mental and physical fatigue and clearer thinking, which the medazepam group did not, and blood tests showed a longer half-life for leu-enkephalin, a natural calming peptide 62-patient anxiety comparison. Semax was tested in different people for a different problem. In acute hemispheric ischemic stroke, 30 patients who added Semax to intensive care showed faster easing of overall cloudiness and specific neurologic problems, especially movement weakness, than 80 matched patients who received usual care alone acute stroke study.
