Quick answer
No, SNAP-8 does not work like Botox. SNAP-8 is a skincare peptide you smooth on twice a day that aims at the same nerve-to-muscle signal Botox blocks, but working from the skin surface, it may soften movement lines around your eyes or forehead a little, and only while you keep using it. Botox is injected into the muscle and relaxes it for a time.
In this guide
Key takeaways
- SNAP-8 aims at the same nerve signal Botox blocks, but a serum works from the skin surface while Botox goes into the muscle with a needle, so SNAP-8 may only soften movement lines a little while you keep using it.
- The big wrinkle number on SNAP-8 labels comes from the company that sells SNAP-8 and is its single best result, not what most women saw.
- An eye patch that mixed SNAP-8 with two other ingredients smoothed eye wrinkles more than a plain patch, but the patch maker ran that test, it cannot show what SNAP-8 does alone, and no one has independently checked a SNAP-8 serum against a dummy serum.
- Argireline, the older peptide SNAP-8 is based on, made no clear difference when women used it on one side of the face and the same serum without it on the other.
- A serum labeled with a SNAP-8 percentage holds only a tiny amount of actual peptide, because that percentage refers to a watery solution that is mostly not peptide.
No. SNAP-8 (acetyl octapeptide-3) does not work like Botox. It is a skincare peptide built to interfere with the same nerve-to-muscle signal that Botox blocks. But you put it on your skin instead of having it injected, and the only test of SNAP-8 on its own is the supplier's 28-day study of 17 women. Botox is injected and relaxes the muscle for a time. SNAP-8 may soften movement lines a little, and only while you keep using it.
How is SNAP-8 supposed to work like Botox?
Botox is injected under the skin. It relaxes the facial muscle for a while by stopping the nerve from releasing acetylcholine, the chemical signal that tells the muscle to contract (how Botox relaxes expression lines).
SNAP-8 is a longer version of Argireline, an older skincare peptide. It copies part of a nerve protein called SNAP-25. It then competes with the real protein for a place in the SNARE complex, the group of proteins the nerve needs to send its "contract" signal (Lipotec's SNAP-8 brochure).
The "like Botox" claim comes mostly from lab-dish tests. In those tests, SNAP-8 reduced the release of signal chemicals from nerve cells. In one of them, the supplier ran Botox alongside it as a comparison.
A nerve cell in a dish is not your forehead. A serum has to work from the skin surface, while Botox is placed at the muscle with a needle. That gap is why the two do not perform alike.
What did the SNAP-8 studies find?
Lipotec, the company that makes SNAP-8, ran the main SNAP-8 study. Seventeen women used a cream with 10% SNAP-8 solution around their eyes twice a day for 28 days. Their wrinkles were measured from silicone molds of the skin taken before and after.
The "up to 63%" you see on serum labels is the biggest drop in wrinkle depth among those 17 women, not the typical result. The brochure puts it this way: "The maximum reduction value of wrinkle depth was 63%." The same brochure says its claims are "for guidance only, there are no warranties of any kind." It also asks brands not to present it to regulators as proof of a finished product's claims (the supplier's SNAP-8 data).
A 2024 study tested SNAP-8 in a microneedle patch together with a vitamin C derivative and a third anti-aging ingredient. Twenty-four people aged 30 to 65 wore the full patch under one eye and a plain hyaluronic acid patch under the other for 28 days. The eye with the full patch showed better wrinkle improvement, plus a significant difference in eye lifting at day 14. Skin elasticity came out similar on both sides, and nobody had side effects (the microneedle patch study).
Raphas, the company that makes the patch, ran that study. The patch also mixed three active ingredients, so the study cannot tell you what SNAP-8 does on its own in a serum.
We found no independent, published trial of a SNAP-8 serum on its own against a placebo.
How does SNAP-8 compare with Botox and other Botox-like peptides?
| Treatment | How you use it | Best human evidence | What it showed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Botox | Injected into the muscle by an injector | The top treatment for expression lines (review of Botox and peptides) | Relaxes the muscle for a time |
| SNAP-8 (acetyl octapeptide-3) | Serum or cream twice a day | Supplier's 28-day test in 17 women, using a cream with 10% SNAP-8 solution | Best single result was 63% less wrinkle depth around the eyes |
| Argireline (acetyl hexapeptide-8, SNAP-8's parent) | Serum twice a day | 2023 double-blind study: 19 women used a hyaluronic acid serum with Argireline on one side of the face and the same serum without it on the other for four weeks (Argireline serum study) | No significant difference between the sides. The author wrote that Argireline "demonstrated far lower efficacy than the botulinum toxin and, therefore, is deemed not to be an alternative treatment." An earlier study in 10 women reported up to 30% less wrinkle depth with Argireline, against up to 10% with the base cream alone |
| Syn-Ake-type peptide (dipeptide diaminobutyroyl benzylamide diacetate) | Cream twice a day | Study by the peptide's developer: 57 volunteers aged 50 to 65 used a 4% formula or a placebo for four weeks (developer's peptide study) | Frown lines between the brows were about 14% smaller in area and length than with placebo. Smile lines around the mouth showed no clear change |
A 2026 review of randomized trials found that peptides applied to the skin, as a group, had a smaller effect on wrinkles than peptides taken by mouth, and the difference from placebo was not statistically significant. Each peptide's result in the table belongs to that peptide alone.
How much SNAP-8 is in a SNAP-8 serum?
Very little. SNAP-8 is sold to brands as a watery solution that is only about 0.05% peptide.
The supplier tells brands to use 3% to 10% of that solution in a finished product (Lipotec's dosage guide). So a serum that says "10% SNAP-8" holds about 0.005% peptide, roughly one part in 20,000.
Here is a price example. Seralune sells a 30 ml SNAP-8 serum labeled "8%" for $46, with acetyl octapeptide-3 fourth on the ingredient list after water, propanediol and glycerin. If that 8% means 8% of the supplier's solution, the bottle holds about 0.004% peptide.
SNAP-8 is a cosmetic ingredient, not a prescription drug. The supplier lists no US cosmetic restrictions on it, so you can buy it off the shelf. In the supplier's safety tests, SNAP-8 caused no skin irritation or allergic reaction. Across randomized trials of peptides for skin aging, taken by mouth or applied to the skin, most people tolerated them well and no serious side effects were reported (2026 peptide review).
What should you do if you want your lines to look different?
Start with the kind of line. Lines that show only when you frown or smile are movement lines. Over the years, they tend to set into lines you can see with your face at rest. A study of mothers and daughters added more evidence that expression wrinkles become permanent over time.
If you want a cheap experiment on movement lines, use a SNAP-8 serum around your eyes or on your forehead for four weeks. That matches how long the studies ran. Take a photo in window light on day one and again at week four, and judge by the photos, not by how your face feels in the mirror at night. Lines you see at rest give a muscle-relaxing serum less to work on.
You also do not have to treat every line someone points at. One bride-to-be posted on Reddit after an injector kept pushing her to treat the wrinkles around her eyes. The top reply was: "I assumed these were after pictures lol. You definitely don't need it!"
If you want a real skin plan instead of another bottle, our clinical team can prescribe tretinoin. Hot or Nothing also offers GHK-Cu copper peptide and NAD+ face cream if they fit your goal. If you want smoother-looking skin and more than a mild serum, take the quiz so our clinical team can see your goal and your skin and decide whether a prescription skin plan, such as tretinoin, fits you.

Is SNAP-8 better than Argireline?
We found no study comparing SNAP-8 and Argireline directly, so no one has shown that SNAP-8 works better. SNAP-8 is a longer version of Argireline built to block the same nerve signal, and its main support is the supplier's own 28-day test in 17 women. In a 2023 double-blind study of 19 women, Argireline made no significant difference compared with the same serum without it.
How long does SNAP-8 take to work?
Give SNAP-8 about four weeks before you judge it, since the studies ran for 28 days. Use it twice a day around your eyes or on your forehead, take a photo in window light on day one and again at week four, and compare the photos. Lines you can see with your face at rest give SNAP-8 less to work on, and any softening lasts only while you keep using it.
Is SNAP-8 safe to use around the eyes?
SNAP-8 looks gentle around the eyes in the little research there is. In a 2024 study, people wore a patch containing SNAP-8 under one eye for 28 days and nobody had side effects. A 2026 review of peptides for skin aging found most people tolerated them well, with no serious side effects reported. SNAP-8 is a cosmetic ingredient, not a prescription drug.
What percentage of SNAP-8 should a serum have?
The supplier tells brands to use 3% to 10% of its SNAP-8 solution in a finished product. That solution is only about 0.05% peptide, so a serum labeled 10% SNAP-8 holds about 0.005% actual peptide, roughly one part in 20,000. The supplier's own eye-area test used a cream with 10% SNAP-8 solution.
