Quick answer
Sermorelin and CJC-1295/ipamorelin have never been compared head to head, so neither one has been shown to do more for muscle or fat. Sermorelin has the longer record in women: after about five months of nightly shots, women aged 55 to 71 had thicker skin, while their lean mass and body fat stayed the same and the men gained lean mass. CJC-1295/ipamorelin keeps growth hormone raised for longer after each shot, but its results so far cover hormone levels rather than muscle or fat, and FDA has posted safety notes on both peptides.

Key takeaways
- Nobody has tested sermorelin against CJC-1295/ipamorelin, so neither one has been shown to beat the other for muscle or fat.
- After about five months of nightly sermorelin, women aged 55 to 71 had thicker skin, but their lean mass and body fat did not change, and only the men gained lean mass.
- CJC-1295 stays active for days instead of minutes and ipamorelin adds a second growth hormone signal, but the results so far show higher hormone levels in young men, not changes in muscle or fat.
- Sermorelin has the milder side effect record, while FDA has reported a faster heart rate and flushing with CJC-1295 and lists ipamorelin as a compounding ingredient that may carry significant safety risks.
- Elara lists compounded sermorelin at $175 for one month or $125 a month on a six-month plan, and Cjc-1295.com lists CJC-1295 with ipamorelin from $157 a month on a 12-month plan up to $199 a month on shorter plans, including a physician consultation, messaging and shipping.
No study has compared sermorelin with CJC-1295/ipamorelin directly. Sermorelin is the one with months of results in a trial that included women. In a five-month trial in older women and men, women's skin got thicker, but their lean mass and body fat did not change, while the men gained lean mass. CJC-1295/ipamorelin raises growth hormone for longer after each shot. Its human study measured hormone levels rather than muscle, fat or recovery, and FDA has posted safety notes on both peptides.
Does sermorelin or CJC-1295/ipamorelin do more for muscle and fat?
No study has tested the two against each other, so neither can be called better for muscle or fat. Here is what each has shown in people.
| Sermorelin | CJC-1295/ipamorelin | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Signals the receptor for growth-hormone-releasing hormone, so your body releases more of its own growth hormone | CJC-1295 uses the same receptor as sermorelin. Ipamorelin adds a second signal through the ghrelin receptor. |
| How long the studied form lasts | Half-life of 10 to 20 minutes, injected nightly in the trials | CJC-1295: half-life of 8 days. Ipamorelin: half-life of 1.5 to 2.5 hours. |
| Who was studied | 10 women and 9 men aged 55 to 71, over five months | CJC-1295: healthy men aged 20 to 40, one injection. Ipamorelin still needs more human studies. |
| What changed in the body | Growth hormone rose. Skin got thicker. Lean mass rose in men. Body weight did not change. | Growth hormone and IGF-1 rose for a week after one shot. Muscle and fat were not measured. |
| What changed in women | Growth hormone rose and skin got thicker. Lean mass and body fat did not change. | No women were in the CJC-1295 study |
In the sermorelin trial, people injected a placebo nightly for 4 weeks, then sermorelin nightly for 16 weeks. Growth hormone went up in both women and men, and skin got thicker in both. Lean mass rose in the men only, and nobody's body weight changed.
In the CJC-1295 study, one injection in healthy men aged 20 to 40 raised average growth hormone by 46% and IGF-1 (the hormone growth hormone makes your body produce) by 45% a week later. Their lowest growth hormone levels rose 7.5-fold. The body's normal growth hormone pulses kept their usual timing and size. The study tracked hormones only, so it can't tell you what happens to your waist or your arms.
Ipamorelin releases growth hormone through a different receptor than sermorelin and CJC-1295. A review of growth hormone peptides says more human studies of its effects are still needed.
What did sermorelin change for women in the study?
In women, the clearest change was thicker skin. Researchers measured it with calipers at four spots on the hands and inner forearm, and it rose in both women and men. Lean mass, body fat and bone density did not change in women. If you want firmer-looking skin, that is the result to know about. If you want visible muscle, go in knowing the trial did not show it in women.
IGF-1 went up within 2 weeks, stayed up for 12 weeks, and drifted back toward its starting level by week 16 in both women and men. Your clinical team may check how you are responding over time.
Men in the trial also reported better well-being and libido and became more responsive to insulin. Women did not get those changes. The researchers concluded that sermorelin "induced anabolic effects favoring men more than women."
The women in this trial were 55 to 71, so nobody studied women in their 30s and 40s. Tell your clinical team your age and goal so they can weigh that gap.
What does CJC-1295/ipamorelin offer that sermorelin doesn't?
It lasts longer. The studied form of CJC-1295 binds to albumin, a protein in your blood, after you inject it, which gives it a half-life of 8 days. Sermorelin's half-life is 10 to 20 minutes, and the trials gave it as a nightly injection. Ask your clinical team which form of CJC-1295 your prescription uses.
It also uses two pathways. CJC-1295 works like sermorelin, through the receptor for growth-hormone-releasing hormone. Ipamorelin adds a second signal through the ghrelin receptor, which is why the two are paired. Nobody has tested whether the pair changes your body more than sermorelin alone.
Our clinical team can prescribe sermorelin, or CJC-1295 with ipamorelin, if it fits your goal and health history.
Which one is safer to start with?
Sermorelin has the milder record in studies. Its side effects were rare: nausea, facial flushing and redness where you inject. A review of growth hormone peptides describes it as having "a very favorable safety profile." In the five-month trial, the only side effect was a short-term rise in blood fats, and it was gone by the end of the study.
FDA has reported a faster heart rate and a body-wide flushing reaction from widened blood vessels in people who used CJC-1295, and it says clinical data are limited. Ask your clinical team what to watch for.
FDA added ipamorelin acetate to category 2 for section 503B compounding on September 29, 2023. Category 2 means FDA has identified significant safety risks. FDA cites a published study that found serious adverse events, including death, when ipamorelin was given into a vein to help the gut move. FDA says it lacks enough information to know whether other injectable routes cause harm.
Neither drug is FDA approved. Both are prescribed through compounding pharmacies, which make the medicine to order. Reviews of drugs that raise growth hormone find them well tolerated but flag blood sugar as something to watch, because these drugs can make your body less responsive to insulin.
What will recovery and the scale look like, and what does it cost?
No trial has measured workout recovery with either option. The closest data come from a six-week study of 11 men aged 64 to 76: 2 mg of sermorelin nightly nearly doubled their growth hormone release and improved 2 of 6 strength tests plus an ab-crunch endurance test.
The scale can go up at first. One man on Reddit, using tesamorelin and ipamorelin alongside other treatments, wrote, "Ive gone from 260 to 272 in 6 weeks." The top comment replied, "Tesa / IPA Does cause some water weight retention." Tesamorelin is a different peptide and this is one man's experience. It is still a good reason to track measurements and photos along with the scale.
For price comparison, Elara lists compounded sermorelin at $175 for one month, $477 for three months ($159 a month), or $750 for six months ($125 a month). Cjc-1295.com lists CJC-1295 with ipamorelin from $157 a month on a 12-month plan, with shorter plans up to $199 a month. Its price includes a physician consultation, messaging and shipping.
If you want firmer skin, more muscle or better recovery, take the quiz. Your clinical team looks at your goal and your health history, and decides whether sermorelin or CJC-1295 with ipamorelin fits your plan.

how long does sermorelin take to work for women
Sermorelin raised growth hormone within about 10 minutes of each nightly shot, and IGF-1, the hormone growth hormone tells your body to make, rose within 2 weeks in women aged 55 to 71. IGF-1 stayed up for 12 weeks and drifted back toward its starting level by week 16. The visible change for women was thicker skin after about four months of nightly shots, while lean mass and body fat did not change. Your clinical team may check how you are responding over time.
can women take CJC-1295 and ipamorelin
Yes, our clinical team can prescribe CJC-1295 with ipamorelin to a woman if it fits her goal and health history. No women were in the human CJC-1295 research, which measured hormone levels in men aged 20 to 40, and ipamorelin still needs more human studies. FDA has reported a faster heart rate and a body-wide flushing reaction with CJC-1295 and lists ipamorelin as a compounding ingredient that may carry significant safety risks, so ask your clinical team what to watch for.
does sermorelin cause water retention
Water retention is not among the sermorelin side effects described in the research behind this article, which lists rare nausea, facial flushing and redness where you inject. Body weight did not change in the five-month sermorelin trial in women and men aged 55 to 71. The water weight comment in the article came from one man on Reddit using tesamorelin and ipamorelin with other treatments, and tesamorelin is a different peptide. Tracking measurements and photos along with the scale gives you a clearer picture.
is sermorelin FDA approved
No, sermorelin is not FDA approved. It is prescribed through compounding pharmacies, which make the medicine to order, and the same goes for CJC-1295 and ipamorelin. Your clinical team decides whether sermorelin fits your goal and health history.
