Quick answer

Neither Lipo-C nor MOTS-c is proven to take fat off a woman's body, so neither one is the better pick for fat loss. If you want the scale to move, GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide are FDA-approved for weight reduction and work in people. MOTS-c suits a woman who wants more energy and is comfortable with early science, while Lipo-C is a nutrient shot that even its seller says is not a weight-loss drug.

Key takeaways

  • Neither Lipo-C nor MOTS-c is proven to take fat off people, so neither one wins for fat loss.
  • MOTS-c kept mice on a high-fat diet from gaining weight without making them eat less, but it has not been tested in people yet or for shrinking fat you already have.
  • Lipo-C is a vitamin-and-nutrient shot, and Riovie, which sells it, says on its own page that it is not a weight-loss drug.
  • If you want the scale to move, semaglutide and tirzepatide are FDA-approved for weight reduction and work in people, though they are off the table if you have a history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN2, a condition that causes tumors in hormone glands.
  • FDA has not yet added MOTS-c to the list of ingredients pharmacies may use to make medicines for patients, so skip the cheap research-use-only vials online and ask your clinical team where its status stands for you.

Neither is proven better. No study has compared Lipo-C with MOTS-c, and neither has been shown in a human study to make people lose fat. MOTS-c has the more striking early science: in mice on a high-fat diet, it prevented weight gain. Lipo-C is a blend of nutrients, and the evidence behind it is limited. If you want fat to come off, GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide are FDA-approved for weight reduction and have shown results in people.

What is the difference between Lipo-C and MOTS-c?

Lipo-C is a vitamin-and-nutrient shot. MOTS-c is a peptide your own cells make. Here is how they compare.

Lipo-C MOTS-c
What it is A compounded injection of nutrients, usually choline, inositol and methionine plus B vitamins (Riovie's Lipo-C page) A small peptide, 16 amino acids long, that your mitochondria make. It was first described in 2015 and is given as an injection under the skin (FDA briefing on MOTS-c)
Proof in people A review of injectable weight treatments says the evidence that ingredients such as inositol and choline work is still limited (review of injectable obesity treatments) FDA found no published studies of MOTS-c products used in humans (FDA briefing)
FDA status Compounded Lipo-C is not FDA-approved (Riovie) Not an FDA-approved drug and not part of any FDA-approved drug (FDA briefing)
Price Riovie charges $119 for one month or $300 for three months (Riovie) Clinic and telehealth programs run from $199 a month at BeyondMD to $299 for a 30-day supply at Longevity DSM in Des Moines (MOTS-c pricing roundup)

Does MOTS-c help you burn fat?

In mice, yes. Nobody has tested it in people yet. Male mice on a high-fat diet got daily MOTS-c injections for eight weeks. They ended up about 20% lighter than untreated mice on the same diet. They also burned more energy, had less fat in the liver and avoided the insulin spike the diet caused (FDA briefing).

The treated mice ate as much as the others, so MOTS-c did not work by curbing appetite. In mice on a normal diet, it did not change body weight (Lee 2015 MOTS-c study). That study tested whether MOTS-c could prevent weight gain. It did not test whether it could shrink fat a body already has.

The energy findings explain the interest from women in their 40s and 50s. In people, blood levels of MOTS-c were lower at ages 45 to 55 than at 18 to 30. In old mice, two weeks of MOTS-c doubled how long they could run on a treadmill. That is why MOTS-c sits with energy and aging treatments rather than weight medications.

Human testing has started. A trial of a modified version of MOTS-c for fatty liver and obesity is registered. That trial uses a related drug, not MOTS-c itself, and a 2023 review described it as ongoing.

Does Lipo-C help you lose fat?

There is little proof that it does. Lipo-C's ingredients are nutrients your body already uses to handle fat. A review of injectable weight treatments says the evidence that these injections work is still limited and calls for more research (review of injectable obesity treatments).

Even a company that sells Lipo-C says so on its own page. Riovie's FAQ asks whether Lipo-C is a weight-loss medication and answers: "No. Lipo-C is a nutrient blend, not a weight-loss drug, and it isn't a substitute for one" (Riovie).

These injections can cause stomach upset and soreness or reactions where you inject, especially at high doses (review).

Which one should you choose if you want to lose fat?

Neither one wins, because no study has compared them and neither has shown fat loss in people. Choose by what you want. If you want the scale to move, look at GLP-1s. If you want more energy and you are comfortable with early science, look at MOTS-c.

If you want fat loss you can measure, GLP-1 medications are the option with results. FDA notes that approved drugs for weight reduction in people with obesity already exist (FDA briefing). The same review that found little evidence for Lipo-C's ingredients says GLP-1 and GIP medications have shown effectiveness in managing weight and improving metabolic markers (review).

GLP-1s are not for everyone. You cannot take them if you have a history of medullary thyroid cancer or a condition called MEN2, which causes tumors in hormone glands (review). Tell your clinical team your history.

Here is what living with a GLP-1 can look like. One person on r/Semaglutide wrote: "Down 123 lbs with semaglutide and recently had an FDL tummy tuck to remove the excess skin and belly hang." They went from "SW 356lbs" to "Surgery day 233lbs."

Side effects can be real too. A person on r/Zepbound taking Zepbound (tirzepatide) wrote: "I started at the lowest dose (2.5 mg), and never increased, due to side effects." They stopped, but said: "The good in all this, I lost 23 lbs and I got really great at counting calories." Their advice: "Listen to your body while it whispers, before it starts to yell."

Our weight plans include semaglutide and tirzepatide. Your clinical team decides which one fits you.

Can you get MOTS-c prescribed right now?

That question is still open. FDA has not added MOTS-c to the list of ingredients pharmacies may use to compound medicines for patients. FDA staff recommended against adding it. They said that without human data, its safety risks in people are unknown, including whether the body mounts an immune reaction to it (FDA briefing).

On July 23, 2026, FDA's compounding advisory committee voted 7 to 5, with 2 abstentions, to recommend adding MOTS-c anyway. That vote is advice, not a rule. As of late August 2026, FDA had published no proposed rule (Peptide News Digest). FDA says it will not make a final decision until it has considered the committee's input and finished all of its reviews (FDA briefing).

Skip the cheap vials online. Sites sell 10 mg of MOTS-c for $43 to $116, but those vials are labeled research use only, not for human use. They come with no prescription and no medical oversight (Peptide News Digest).

MOTS-c is part of our energy and aging line. Ask your clinical team whether it fits your plan and where its status stands for you.

FAQ

How much does MOTS-c cost per month?

MOTS-c clinic and telehealth programs run from $199 a month at BeyondMD to $299 for a 30-day supply at Longevity DSM in Des Moines, according to a Peptide News Digest pricing roundup. Insurance does not cover it, so you pay out of pocket. Sites also sell 10 mg vials for $43 to $116, but those are labeled research use only, not for human use, and come with no prescription or medical oversight.

Is MOTS-c FDA approved?

No. MOTS-c is not an FDA-approved drug and is not part of any FDA-approved drug. In July 2026, FDA's compounding advisory committee voted 7 to 5, with 2 abstentions, to recommend letting pharmacies make it for individual patients, even though FDA staff had recommended against it. That vote is advice, not a rule, and as of late August 2026 FDA had published no proposed rule, so ask your clinical team where its status stands for you.

What are the side effects of Lipo-C injections?

The most common side effect of Lipo-C is a reaction where you inject, such as redness, itching, pain, bruising or swelling, and Riovie says changing the injection spot each time usually keeps it mild. Some people also get mild stomach upset, nausea, loose stools, flushing, headache, or a temporary metallic or fishy taste or body odor, which Riovie says comes from the choline. Riovie says to get care right away for a rash, swelling or trouble breathing.

Does MOTS-c give you more energy?

No one has shown that MOTS-c gives people more energy yet, because it has not been tested in humans. In lab cells and mice, MOTS-c helped muscle take up sugar and switched on the machinery cells use to burn fat, which is why it sits with energy and aging treatments. If more energy is your goal and you are comfortable with early science, ask your clinical team whether MOTS-c fits your plan.
