Quick answer
For stress-related sleep trouble, L-theanine and GABA are a better first step than Selank, because both have shown small sleep gains in people, while Selank has been tested for anxiety and not for sleep. FDA says it lacks important safety information on selank acetate in humans. None of the three has been shown to lower cortisol enough to fix your sleep.

Key takeaways
- Cortisol may not be what keeps you awake, since a month of daily L-theanine lowered cortisol no more than a dummy pill did, so keep a two-week sleep log and bring it to your clinical team before you buy anything.
- L-theanine can help you fall asleep a little faster and feel a bit better during the day, so give it two to four weeks and expect a small change at best.
- GABA is hit or miss: 300 mg may help you fall asleep faster, but your overall sleep quality may not get better.
- Selank has been used for anxiety, not sleep, it can act more like a pick-me-up than a sleep aid, and FDA says it lacks important information on its safety in humans.
- L-theanine and GABA come in off-the-shelf capsules such as SFI Health Sleep Support at $61.99 for 180 capsules (about 45 nights), while Selank nasal spray from Kove RX, an online telehealth seller, costs $150 for one month or $390 for three months after a physician reviews an intake.
No research here shows Selank, L-theanine or GABA lowering cortisol enough to fix your sleep. L-theanine and GABA have small human studies with modest sleep results. Selank has anxiety studies, and none of them report sleep or cortisol. For stress-related sleep trouble, L-theanine and GABA are the better first step because they have sleep data. Before you buy any of the three, it is worth checking what is causing your wake-ups.
Is high cortisol really what's keeping me awake?
Maybe. Cortisol is your body's main stress hormone, and it is easy to blame when you're staring at the ceiling. But none of these three options has been shown to lower cortisol in a way that fixes sleep. If you assume cortisol is the cause, you can end up chasing the wrong fix.
L-theanine gives the clearest test. In a 28-day trial of 30 stressed adults, people took 400 mg a day of L-theanine or a placebo. The change in cortisol in their saliva was not significantly different between the two groups. Their stress scores also fell about equally, by 17.98% on L-theanine and 17.88% on placebo. Some of the relief you feel from a new supplement may come from expecting it to work, or from time passing.
Women also describe night waking that doesn't fit a simple stress story. One woman in r/Menopause, 50 and two years past menopause, wrote that progesterone worked for two months, and then: "I'm starting to have those horrible 3am wake ups again." Another woman in r/Peptides was already taking magnesium and L-theanine: "Yet I always wake up 5-10 times per night."
Before you buy anything, keep a two-week log. Note when you wake, what your day was like and where you are in your cycle or menopause. Bring that log to your clinical team. They can tell you what is worth testing.
Do L-theanine and GABA supplements actually help sleep?
They help a little. L-theanine has more sleep research than GABA, and the effect is small. A 2025 review of 19 randomized trials with 897 people found small improvements in three areas: how fast people fell asleep, how well they functioned during the day and their overall sleep quality. The reviewers say the right dose and length of use are still unknown. They also note that few trials tested "pure" L-theanine. Treat L-theanine as a low-risk thing to try, not a proven fix.
The 28-day trial also tracked sleep with a watch-style device. The L-theanine group had less light sleep than the placebo group at 14 and 28 days. Their total time asleep went down by day 28. Side effects were mild. Two people reported a metallic taste or dry mouth that may have been related to L-theanine.
GABA is a calming chemical your brain already makes. A 2020 review of oral GABA found mixed results. The review said GABA "may have beneficial effects on stress and sleep." It also said the studies were too small and too varied to show how much to take, when to take it or for how long.
The GABA sleep studies show small gains. In one study, 300 mg of GABA shortened the time it took middle-aged poor sleepers to fall asleep. But their overall sleep-quality scores were no different from the comparison group's.
The GABA cortisol results give a few hints and no clear answer. In a 4-week study, cortisol rose in the placebo group but not in the GABA group. In another study, a single dose of GABA lowered cortisol only in people with chronic fatigue.
Does Selank help with sleep?
No study found here tested Selank on sleep, and none measured cortisol. Selank is a lab-made peptide (a short chain of amino acids) that has been studied for anxiety.
Both Selank studies compared it with older anti-anxiety drugs called benzodiazepines, which calm the nervous system. Neither study used a placebo. The larger study, of 62 patients with generalized anxiety disorder and neurasthenia, gave 30 of them Selank and 32 medazepam. Anxiety relief was similar in both groups. The other study included 60 patients with phobic-anxiety and somatoform disorders and compared Selank with phenazepam. Its authors described a "pronounced" anti-anxiety effect that lasted a week after the last dose.
Both studies were small, and both were in patients with diagnosed anxiety disorders, not women with stress-related sleep trouble. The 62-patient study also said "selank had also antiasthenic and psychostimulant effects," meaning it fought fatigue and acted as a stimulant. That is a reason not to assume Selank works as a sleep aid.
FDA's safety note on selank acetate is cautious. It says compounded drugs containing selank acetate may pose a risk of immunogenicity, meaning an immune reaction, for certain ways of taking it. The reason is that the peptide can clump and carry impurities. The note also says "FDA lacks important information regarding any safety issues raised by selank acetate administered to humans."
That FDA page does not say whether Selank can be prescribed or compounded today, so don't read it as permission or as a ban. Selank is not part of Hot or Nothing's current plans. If anxiety is the main thing keeping you up, your clinical team can talk you through the options we do offer and what to watch for.
Interest in Selank is high. Selank or Semax came up in 58 of 80 recent Reddit threads about sleep, energy and focus. Popularity on Reddit does not show that Selank works.
How do Selank, L-theanine and GABA compare side by side?
| L-theanine | GABA | Selank | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human sleep data | 19 randomized trials in a pooled review, with small gains in falling asleep and sleep quality | Several small studies with mixed results | None found |
| Cortisol data | No difference from placebo in a 28-day trial | A few hints in small studies: one 4-week study and one single-dose study in people with chronic fatigue | None found |
| Safety information | Mild metallic taste or dry mouth in two people in a 28-day trial | The reviews summarized here did not report safety findings | FDA says it lacks important information on the safety of selank acetate in humans |
| Form and cost | Off-the-shelf capsules. Example: SFI Health Sleep Support, $61.99 for 180 capsules (about 45 nights). A 4-capsule bedtime serving has 400 mg L-theanine, 500 mg GABA, 200 mg ashwagandha, 200 mg valerian and 100 mg passion flower | Off-the-shelf capsules, including the same SFI Health blend | Nasal spray (2.5 mg/mL) from Kove RX, an online telehealth seller: $150 for one month or $390 for three months, sold after a physician reviews an intake |
What should I try first for stress-related sleep trouble?
- Track your sleep for two weeks first. A 3am wake-up, trouble falling asleep and a racing mind can have different causes. Your log shows which one you're dealing with.
- Give L-theanine or GABA several weeks. The L-theanine trial measured sleep at 14 and 28 days, so try one product for about that long and keep notes. Expect a small change at best. Don't treat the result as proof about your cortisol either way.
- Check with your clinical team before starting a supplement if you take prescription medicine or are pregnant or nursing. The label on the SFI Health blend says to consult a physician in those cases. It also says the product "should not replace any medication."
- Don't pay for Selank because of the Reddit buzz. The human data covers anxiety, not sleep, and FDA says it lacks important safety information in humans. If you've tried supplements and still wake at 3am, tell your clinical team. They can look at your hormones, stress and sleep together.
If you wake at 3am or can't switch off at night, guessing with supplements is a slow way to find out why. Take the quiz and tell our clinical team about your sleep, stress and cycle, so your plan starts with what is behind your wake-ups.

Does Selank lower cortisol?
There is no evidence that Selank lowers cortisol, because no Selank study found for this article measured it. The Selank research looked at anxiety in patients with diagnosed anxiety disorders, not at sleep or stress hormones. One study also found Selank fought fatigue and acted as a stimulant, so don't assume it will help you sleep.
Is Selank FDA approved?
Nothing in the sources for this article shows that Selank is FDA approved. FDA's page on risky compounding ingredients says compounded selank acetate may cause an immune reaction for some ways of taking it, because the peptide can clump and carry impurities, and that FDA lacks important information on its safety in humans. That page does not say whether Selank can be prescribed or compounded today. Selank is not part of Hot or Nothing's current plans.
How long does L-theanine take to improve sleep?
Give L-theanine two to four weeks. In a month-long study, people taking 400 mg a day had less light sleep at two weeks and again at four weeks, though their total time asleep went down by the end. Expect a small change at best, keep notes while you try it, and know that the best dose and length of use are still unknown.
How much does Selank nasal spray cost per month?
Selank nasal spray (2.5 mg/mL) from Kove RX, an online telehealth seller, costs $150 for one month or $390 for three months. Kove RX sells it after a physician reviews an intake. For comparison, SFI Health Sleep Support, an off-the-shelf L-theanine and GABA blend, costs $61.99 for 180 capsules, which lasts about 45 nights.
