Is Glutathione Injection Better Than Liposomal Glutathione?

Can injectable glutathione improve liver detoxification and dull skin tone better than oral liposomal glutathione?

Quick answer

Glutathione injections have not been shown to work better than liposomal glutathione for dull skin or liver detox, because nobody has tested the two against each other. Glutathione shots lightened skin no more than a dummy treatment did, and most of the change faded within six months, while glutathione capsules lowered pigment on sun-exposed skin with few side effects. The Philippine drug regulator has also warned that injected glutathione can harm the liver, kidneys and nervous system.

Key takeaways

  • Glutathione shots have never been tested against liposomal glutathione, and the shots lightened skin no more than a dummy treatment, with most of the change gone six months after the last one.
  • There is no proof that injected or liposomal glutathione helps your liver detox, and liposomal capsules raise your glutathione levels without showing that your liver works any better.
  • Injected glutathione has been linked to liver problems and a severe allergic reaction, and the Philippine drug regulator warns about liver, kidney, nerve and serious skin reactions, while capsules cause few side effects.
  • He & She MD charges $100 a month for glutathione injections on a three-month plan or $125 for a single month, TrueServing's comparison put the median liposomal supplement at $41.99 a month at 500 mg a day, and your skin color goes back to where it started once you stop either one.
  • Glutathione capsules work mostly on sun-exposed skin rather than pigment you already have, so for dull skin your clinical team can look at whether tretinoin, GHK-Cu copper peptide or NAD+ face cream fits your goal.

No study has compared injectable glutathione with oral liposomal glutathione head to head, for dull skin or for liver detox. So no, the shot has not been shown to be better. In the one placebo-controlled trial of IV glutathione for skin color, the group getting glutathione did not differ significantly from the placebo group, and most of the change was gone six months later. Glutathione capsules taken by mouth lowered pigment in sun-exposed skin compared with placebo, and regulators have warned about liver, kidney and serious skin reactions from injected glutathione.

Does a glutathione shot brighten skin more than liposomal glutathione?

Nobody knows, because no trial has put injectable and oral liposomal glutathione side by side. Neither one has been shown to be better for skin tone. Here is what the separate placebo-controlled trials found, from a review of glutathione for skin lightening:

Trial What was tested What changed How long it lasted Safety
IV glutathione (Zubair et al. 2016) 12 IV injections vs placebo Skin got lighter in 6 of 16 women on glutathione and 3 of 16 on placebo. The difference was not statistically significant. Six months after the last injection, only 1 of the 16 women on glutathione still had lighter skin Side effects in 32% of people (details in the safety section below)
Oral glutathione capsules (Arjinpathana and Asawanonda 2012) Capsules vs placebo The skin's melanin (pigment) reading fell compared with placebo in sun-exposed areas, including the right side of the face and the left forearm Skin color returns to where it started once glutathione stops Oral glutathione was well tolerated
Oral glutathione, two forms (Weschawalit et al. 2017) Two forms of glutathione, including the reduced form (GSH), vs placebo Both forms improved skin elasticity. GSH beat placebo on facial wrinkles in some spots. Pigment dropped significantly only in women over 40, on one area of the arm. Skin color returns to where it started once glutathione stops Oral glutathione was well tolerated

Every one of these trials measured how much lighter skin got. If your complaint is dull skin, that is usually about texture and glow, and these studies did not measure glow. A shot that lightens your skin a little is not the same as skin that looks brighter and smoother.

Does injectable glutathione detox your liver better?

There is no evidence that it does. None of the studies here tested whether injectable or oral glutathione improves liver detox in healthy women. The detox claim is marketing, not a measured result.

What the shot does do is get more glutathione into your blood, briefly. A systematic review found that IV glutathione reaches much higher blood levels than glutathione taken by mouth, but the effect is short-lived. Oral glutathione is poorly absorbed unless it comes in a liposomal form, which protects it from being broken down in the gut. After an IV injection, part of the glutathione is cleared from the blood with a half-time of about 10 minutes, and the rest breaks down into its three amino acids.

Liposomal capsules do get absorbed. In a one-month pilot study of 12 healthy adults, liposomal glutathione at 500 or 1,000 mg a day raised the body's glutathione stores. Higher levels show the capsule gets into your system. They do not show your liver works any better.

Regulators are not backing the detox idea either. The only approved use of injectable glutathione named by the Philippine FDA is as an add-on during cisplatin chemotherapy. It has not approved any injectable product for skin lightening.

Is IV glutathione safe?

The injected form comes with real risks, and the capsules have the cleaner record. In the IV skin trial, 32% of people had side effects, including liver problems and one case of anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction). The dose was 1,200 mg twice a week for six weeks.

The Philippine FDA warns that injectable glutathione for skin lightening can have toxic effects on the liver, kidneys and nervous system, and raises concern about Stevens-Johnson syndrome, a severe skin reaction. It also warns that HIV and hepatitis B and C can spread when shots are given by non-medical staff or in non-sterile settings.

No study has looked at long-term IV glutathione use for any reason. Researchers also warn that shifting skin from brown pigment toward red pigment may raise the risk of sun-related skin cancer.

Some telehealth clinics sell glutathione as a small shot under the skin instead of an IV drip. None of the studies here tested that route.

Across the trials, oral glutathione was well tolerated and the injected forms were not.

How much does glutathione cost a month?

A shot costs roughly double the median liposomal supplement, or more:

Option Monthly cost Conditions
He & She MD glutathione injection (under the skin, in the abdomen, thigh or upper arm) $100 a month on a three-month plan, or $125 for a single month Price depends on whether you commit to three months
Liposomal glutathione supplements, including liquids, capsules, softgels and gummies (TrueServing comparison of 64 products) $2.60 to $624.94 a month, median $41.99 Based on 500 mg a day. Check the label for the actual glutathione amount, because some products are blends with only a little glutathione in them.

Whichever you buy, the lightening lasts only as long as you keep paying. Skin color went back to where it started after people stopped glutathione.

What works better for dull skin than glutathione?

A treatment aimed at whatever is making your skin dull. That might be uneven tone, rough texture, fine lines or sun damage, and each one calls for a different treatment. A pill or shot made for lightening does not target texture or lines.

Even for tone, glutathione has limits. In the oral trials it worked mostly on sun-exposed skin, which fits the idea that it affects new pigment rather than pigment you already have. The researchers do not recommend it for long-term use, especially if you are not also protecting your skin from UV with sunscreen.

Our clinical team can prescribe tretinoin, GHK-Cu copper peptide or NAD+ face cream if one of them fits your skin goal, and can build them into one plan with you. Tell your clinical team about any glutathione you take, whether drips, shots or capsules, so they can see your whole routine.

If you want brighter, smoother skin without paying for drips whose results faded in trials, take the quiz so your clinical team can see whether tretinoin, GHK-Cu or NAD+ face cream fits your skin goal.

FAQ

do glutathione skin results go away when you stop

Yes. Skin color goes back to where it started once you stop taking glutathione, whether you used shots or capsules. In the IV shot study, almost none of the women still had lighter skin six months after their last injection. Researchers do not yet know exactly how long the fade takes.

is NAC cheaper than liposomal glutathione

The research for this article does not include NAC prices, so there is no fair cost comparison to give you. NAC (N-acetylcysteine) is another pill a review mentioned as a way to support glutathione levels. For reference, TrueServing's comparison of 64 liposomal glutathione products found $2.60 to $624.94 a month, with a median of $41.99, based on 500 mg a day. Ask your clinical team before swapping one for the other.

what dose of glutathione was used in studies

The IV skin study used 1,200 mg of glutathione twice a week for six weeks, which added up to 12 injections. A one-month study of liposomal glutathione used 500 or 1,000 mg a day, and both doses raised the body's glutathione stores. The doses used in the capsule studies for skin color are not listed in the research here.

does glutathione work on dark spots you already have

Probably not much. Glutathione pills worked mostly on sun-exposed skin, which fits the idea that glutathione affects new pigment rather than pigment you already have. Researchers also do not recommend it for long-term use, especially if you are not wearing sunscreen and protecting your skin from UV.
