Quick answer

The best collagen supplement for women over 40 is a plain, unflavored hydrolyzed collagen peptide powder at 2.5 to 10 grams a day, taken every day for at least two months. Collagen peptides tend to leave skin softer, more hydrated and bouncier, but they are much less reliable for wrinkles or sagging. Neither marine nor bovine collagen has been shown to be better for skin, so pick by diet, allergies and price.

Key takeaways

  • Buy an unflavored powder labeled "hydrolyzed collagen" or "collagen peptides" that clearly lists its source and gives 2.5 to 10 grams per serving, with 5 grams as a good middle number.
  • Neither marine nor bovine collagen has been shown to be better for skin, so choose bovine if you want the cheaper tub and skip marine if you have a fish allergy.
  • Collagen's most reliable results are softer, more hydrated, bouncier skin, and women past menopause can get bouncier cheek skin within about a month on 5 grams of marine collagen a day.
  • Collagen is much less reliable for wrinkles and sagging, and it did not help women over 60 with very thin, fragile skin that tears and bruises easily.
  • Take photos before you start and compare them at about two months, and if you want firmer, smoother skin than collagen gives, take the quiz to see whether tretinoin, GHK-Cu copper peptide or NAD+ face cream fits your skin plan.

The best collagen supplement for women over 40 is a plain hydrolyzed collagen peptide powder, taken at the 2.5 to 10 grams a day used in studies, every day for at least two months. In trials of mostly middle-aged women, collagen peptides improved skin hydration and elasticity, but results for wrinkles were much less consistent. Marine or bovine matters less than dose and consistency, so choose by diet, allergies and price.

What should I look for in a collagen supplement after 40?

  • "Hydrolyzed collagen" or "collagen peptides" on the label. Hydrolyzed means the collagen has been broken into small pieces. Most trials in a 2019 review of oral collagen trials used collagen hydrolysate, and the rest used even smaller collagen tripeptides or dipeptides.
  • A serving with 2.5 to 10 grams of collagen. Eight of the 11 trials in that review gave participants 2.5 to 10 grams of collagen hydrolysate a day for 8 to 24 weeks. Check that one serving of your product lands in that range.
  • 5 grams if you want one number to aim for. Postmenopausal women in a marine collagen elasticity trial took 5 grams a day, which sits in the middle of the studied range.
  • An unflavored powder that lists its source and dose clearly. The 2019 review points out that rules on the quality, absorption and efficacy of collagen supplements are lacking. A clear label is your best check on what you're buying.
  • The one you will take every day. No study here shows one brand beating another. Any hydrolyzed collagen at a studied dose, taken daily, meets the bar. That gives you a buying rule instead of a brand to chase.

Is marine or bovine collagen better for skin?

Neither one has been shown to be better for your skin. Bovine costs less and gives you two collagen types. Marine is the one used in the postmenopausal elasticity trial.

Bovine collagen Marine collagen
Source Cow hide and bones Fish skin and scales
Collagen types Type I and type III Type I
Price Typically 20 to 40 percent cheaper Costs more
Who should skip it Anyone who avoids beef Anyone with a fish allergy, or who avoids fish

Brands often claim that marine collagen absorbs better because its pieces are smaller. But studies comparing the two directly in people are limited. The elasticity trial in postmenopausal women used marine collagen, which shows marine can work. It does not show that bovine can't. If you eat fish and don't mind paying more, marine is fine. If you want the cheaper tub, bovine is fine too.

What will collagen do for my skin after 40?

Collagen's most reliable results are softer, more hydrated, bouncier skin. A 2026 review of 35 randomized trials, with 2,534 participants who were mostly women in their 40s and 50s, found the clearest and most repeatable improvements in skin hydration, elasticity and barrier function. Your barrier is the outer layer that holds water in and keeps irritants out.

Wrinkles are a different story. The same review found that results for wrinkles and the deeper structure of the skin were far less consistent, possibly because the trials were too short to show wrinkles changing. Another 2026 review of randomized trials calls the clinical evidence for collagen on age-related skin changes inconsistent.

The strongest result in women past menopause came fast. In a trial of 36 postmenopausal women, 5 grams of marine collagen a day improved cheek elasticity compared with placebo within 4 weeks, and the difference was still there 4 weeks after they stopped taking it.

Collagen does not help every kind of aging skin. In 56 women aged 60 to 93 with dermatoporosis, which is thin, fragile skin that tears and bruises easily, 6 months of a 5-gram daily collagen powder, a collagen serum or both did no better than placebo on any measure. If you're in your 40s or 50s, you look more like the women in the trials that worked. Expect better hydration and bounce rather than a lift.

How do I know if my collagen is working, and what will it cost?

  1. Take photos before you start. Shoot your face in the same light, at the same angle, with no makeup. Don't rely on how your skin feels. In the fragile-skin trial, 70 to 89 percent of women in every group said their skin had improved, and that included the women taking placebo.
  2. Take your dose every day, then compare at about 2 months. One trial saw elasticity change by week 4, but most trials in the 2019 review ran 8 to 24 weeks. Put your 2-month photos next to your first ones before you decide.
  3. Budget for it. Vital Proteins unflavored collagen peptides cost $27 for a 9.33-ounce tub with 14 servings, or $45 for a 19.3-ounce tub with 28 servings. Subscribe & Save takes 15 percent off. Check how many grams of collagen each serving gives you against the 2.5 to 10 gram range.
  4. Expect few downsides. Across 11 randomized trials with 805 patients, collagen was generally safe and no adverse events were reported. That makes a 2-month test low risk.

What if collagen isn't enough for my wrinkles or sagging?

Firmness can change in your late 30s and 40s even when you've been careful. One 37-year-old woman who had used tretinoin for years and was weighing collagen peptides wrote: "Because I've done “everything right,” I'm struggling to understand why this happened so suddenly."

Collagen trials showed their clearest results in hydration, elasticity and barrier function. Results for deeper lines and the skin's underlying structure were far less consistent. If your goal is to soften lines or firm up skin that has started to sag, collagen covers one part of a skin plan, not the whole plan.

Our clinical team can prescribe tretinoin, GHK-Cu copper peptide or NAD+ face cream if one fits your skin goal, alongside the collagen you already take. If you want firmer, smoother skin than a collagen powder can give you, take the quiz to start a skin plan with our clinical team.

FAQ

Is it safe to take collagen every day long term?

Collagen looks low risk as a daily supplement, but the studies behind it lasted from about one to six months, not years. A review of 11 trials found collagen was generally safe with no side effects reported, and a six-month study in women over 60 also found none. If you have a fish allergy, choose bovine collagen instead of marine.

Does collagen help crepey skin after menopause?

Collagen can make skin bouncier after menopause, but it is not a reliable fix for thin, crepey-looking skin. Women past menopause who took 5 grams of marine collagen a day had more elastic cheek skin within 4 weeks, and the change was still there a month after they stopped. In women over 60 with very thin, fragile skin that tears and bruises easily, six months of collagen powder did no better than a dummy powder. Expect better hydration and bounce rather than a lift.

Do collagen creams work as well as collagen powder?

Collagen creams have not been shown to work like collagen powder. In the one study here that tested a collagen serum, on the forearms of women over 60 with very thin, fragile skin, neither the serum nor the powder did better than a dummy version after six months. The results for softer, more hydrated, bouncier skin come from collagen powder taken by mouth.

How much does a collagen supplement cost a month?

A daily scoop of Vital Proteins unflavored collagen peptides costs $45 for a 19.3-ounce tub with 28 servings, which covers four weeks. The smaller 9.33-ounce tub costs $27 for 14 servings, and Subscribe & Save takes 15 percent off. Check how many grams of collagen each serving gives you so you land in the 2.5 to 10 gram range.
